This system is fantastic. Gives us access to basic player customization that was available in previous titles but leaves room for extra goodies to monetize. Shoot I’d be way more down to pay for the extras too if it meant unlocking a whole extra set of colors or a finish to play around with too
I think you’re right on the money about it coming down to the engine, but that would really only make the difference between whether it’d be a major undertaking or just a bunch a relatively simple work. Even if it’s not terribly demanding to do so, it’d still a considerable change to their current visuals. They wouldn’t just be able to alter changes of color and textures without considering how things like lighting would behave with different textures, for example.
If it was something they ever did, I don’t see it happening outside of a major title update, but you never know. I personally think the demand for a full rework of the customization suite misses the mark entirely as Halo has NEVER done anything resembling that kind of detail. We’ve had primary color, and secondary color, applied to fixed armor schemes and that’s been it. Suddenly expecting a massive level of customization isn’t merely being a little demanding, its literally off-brand.
This would be amazing!
Just commenting my support for this idea in case 343 are reading
This is truly amazing! Excellent work OP. I was so hoping this would be something we would be getting seeing as this was the last installment.
Halo multiplayer has always been about community customization to me (ie - unique custom games, forge maps, spartan aesthetics). I’ve always been salty ever since my OG Halo 2 emblem went by the wayside because of reasons?
I think the intent of this sort of customization presented in this post is an awesome step in the direction the community base would have expected. I would absolutely drop some $$$ to bling out my spartan if it worked similar to this.
While I did purchase the BP immediately without thought once I booted up the game, I will not be purchasing anything else given how customization is locked down in 343’s current configuration. It sucks.
I hope they see this.
Commenting to show my support as well.
So I say coating could be slit into 3 categories. patterns, primary color, and secondary color. This would allow more agency in customization and add more cosmetic options that could be implemented
The thing is though, that level of detail exists in the very explanation of how they create the coatings. When they were initially revealed this was their description:
“ a seven-layer shader that allows us to put any artist-authored color, material, or pattern into seven channels and apply it to in-game items like weapons, armor, and vehicles .”
The channels already exist, it’s just a matter of making them customizable with color and texture options, and creating the UI to facilitate that system.
Adding my comment to bump this up as much as I can. The current “Customization” system is not what I want out of a Halo game, Nothing in the store is attractive to me. The suggested system would make the possibility of me spending money on this game past the Campaign much much more likely.
These were my thoughts exactly.
Couldnt agree more. 343, this is the long-term best solution. I would also be changing my stance on using money on the game apart from Battle Pass if it was like this. Maybe also cosmetics that didnt cost as much as the battlepass but I guess that is a seperate problem in another thread.
Just showing my support here for the OP.
Armor Coatings should be universal to all Armor Cores, seriously how was locking My white Armor Coating that I paid for just to one Armor core… I can deal with the whole Armor core thing as much as it’s a tough pill to swallow, but dude the armor Coatings should be universal to all Armor cores.
This is a very nice warframe like system that would be very cool to see but it seems like that system would take quite a while to implement, so even if we were to get it, it would take months to get that out.
This is exactly the impression I got from armor coatings in trailers/early footage.
Please 343, if you genuinely want to take Halo in the right direction, this would be a fantastic change.
Bumping this, cause this idea is great, and it doesn’t deserve to die.
343 this man is doing your job for you please listen!
This is a great idea. Hopefully they look at this.
It’s far from dead when there are gaming news people taking it up. I saw a GameRant article yesterday covering the reddit post that inspired this thread.
It’s crazy to me that the only thing 343 has commented on at all is slow battle pass progression. No comment on complaints regarding customization, shop prices, weapon balance, the BTB vehicle drop system, aiming, etc.
