A Compromis That Works for Everyone... Armor Coating Customization Feedback / Suggestion

It’s a shame that a color scheme some used for years is now locked behind a paywall for $5 to $10 dollars. I think everyone is with you when saying the whole HCS armor kit thing is broken. Locking it to an armor core let alone the armor core’s kit is so wrong. I don’t want to support the game financially in its current state. I’ll continue to play it, but I’ll refrain from participating in their practices :frowning:

Anthem did it, with a full rgb color wheel to boot rather than a color palate.

Look, I’m not saying I’d like it. As a player I’d it if literally everything about the multiplayer were free and I just had to unlock it. That’s what’s best for the players. But making literally everything free would generate no money, since the multiplayer is free to play. So the multiplayer has to cost money. And personally, I’m fine with getting some basic colors to choose from by default, and paying for some cuter ones. If you’re not, that’s cool. But 343 does have to make money some how, and wouldn’t you rather pay for this over what we have?

Apparently 343i’s excuse is that it saves disk space, but I’d be willing to free up 100+ gigs of it if it meant I could have a system like this. If Anthem did it without costing me 1TB of disk space I think 343i can too.

Then 343 needs to redesign how the engine creates our Spartans because thats a ridiculous excuse.

Consoles come with up to 1TB now, with the option to get extra SSDs/HDDs. Heck, you could get a 4TB+ external. Is space really a concern these days? I don’t mean to doubt, it’s just hard to believe they’d say that.

That’s what I’m saying. The system I proposed is used in very successful games as a monetization model. It keeps what we have always had while monetizing the new features that they’re introducing. They can still succeed by including this system as it’s been proven with games like Warframe. Even the community was vocal about it. I’ve seen several posts saying they’d feel better about spending money if they had this system. That they would by palettes, textures, and so forth as they did in Warframe and Rocket League. 343i can make money this way.

It really doesn’t feel like a concern, it feels like it was a monetization excuse. If I ever find the post I’ll share it with you.

Source on that? I don’t think I ever read something about saving on disk space being the reason for coatings.

I can’t find it anywhere, either I could be wrong, or it was something else. If I am wrong, I apologize for misinforming.

Not understanding the argument for not having this system, apart from the textures this was already essentially the system in previous Halos (Primary color/Secondary). This is just more of the same expanded. Its kind of crazy that this seems like a pipedream even though its so simple.

OP’s pictures are pretty dope

I was reading some reports about the backlash of last year over the customization system. One of @Unyshek’s tweets on Oct 23, 2020 said:

“Why not a hybrid system where I can change my colors and the rest of the coating remains the same?”

We love this idea, but colors and materials are designed and built into each specific coating. I’m hoping to elaborate on the tech behind coatings in a future Community Update.

Do you know if he ever got around to explaining it in a twitch stream or something since the post a year ago? I still can’t provide links because my trust level is still low.

This was also mentioned on 24 October 2020:

"From the beginning, ‘player expression’ has been a key pillar of Halo Infinite and to achieve these goals, the team has developed a new system which is a powerful and flexible way to create customization content quicker and more robustly than we’ve been able to in the past. According to Lead Player Investment Designer, Christopher Blohm, a “coating" is “a seven-layer shader that allows us to put any artist-authored color, material, or pattern into seven channels and apply it to in-game items like weapons, armor, and vehicles.”

The link to the blog post they made on waypoint is gone after the update and now takes you to an error page:

“404 Page Not Found
Something’s missing here”

All we can conclude is that they could, but won’t make a customization that the community truly wants even though they have the means to do so.

It would be nice to hear some kind of explanation for textures/colors at least. I’m sure I’m not the only one, but I’ve done some 3D modelling before and it seems pretty basic to be able to wrap textures around a model even with a very high level of polygons. Unless there is some new way that they’re doing it that I’m not aware of?

That was my conclusion. I level design for fun in UE4/5 and it seems like this wouldn’t be impossible.

Or, with enough feedback and luke-warm reception they may backtrack on the design, or allow for some manner of personal customization. That was, afterall, last year.

I still can’t believe that the backlash was so strong last year, and yet they did nothing. It was a huge blow to the fans who’ve been around since the beginning. Regardless, I’ll continue to criticize and hope for the best.

I think this system is perfect! This game has perfect EVERYTHING except limiting armor cores and just lacking color customization.

If they run with this then I’d be more than happy to spend money for this.

Please consider this 343!

This would be the best possible customization system!
This all reminds me of Halo 5/MCC where the emblems first required you to pick from prebuilt sets of color, but eventually 343 added the option for custom color selection.
Honestly I can settle for what we have now, but your approach with less barriers would be so great. And it’s still monetizable so I could see it happening.

I like this suggested system.

Personally right now I just wish armour and visor colours applied to both armour cores. I keep unlocking stuff I like and then I’m like, oh, okay, it’s not for the armour core I actually use.

To be honest, I like the armor components being separated by core and Generation. Colors and visors, though? Yeah, those absolutely should be universal.
