Got tha message across perfectly. Hero
the coatings need to be universal not locked to certain armour cores unlocking all reach armour set and then half of the colours are for the mark VII. or just make everything universal and not locked to armour cores.
I have been hoping for a customisation option like what you have proposed here for years. Please @343, take note and give us this kind of customisation.
I would be more inclined to buy a texture pack giving me a wider range of colours or a set of textures to change the style of my Spartans armour if I had the ability to customise the basics of my armour colours. As it stands at the moment, I cannot make the colour scheme that I like, and have been running for the past decade or so because the armour coating does not exist. And the colour scheme is probably not going to be high up on @343’s priority list as it’s not a popular colour scheme. Which is why I use it, I like to be unique, but I can’t in Halo Infinite.
The current system doesn’t interest me or make me want to engage with the customisation system at all. This proposed system would encourage me to invest into the customisation system and spend money on texture packs to enhance the way I like my spartan to look.
Warframe pallets. That’s it. Simple. You can design a whole pallet around the banished, forerunner, UNSC, classic covenant and so forth. Texture patterns and all sorts could be added
absolutely perfect, this system would make infinites customisation and player expression soar far above that of all previous games combined, this is the way forward and i hope 343 can see how incredible this system would be
This is an extremely well thought out proposal. I think the images do a fantastic job of demonstrating how a system like this could not only be more intuitive and expressive, but also how it integrates into the cosmetics market 343 has currently.
Paid cosmetics, including those in a Battle Pass, should be interesting, enticing, and overall something folks want to seek out. The current system, along with the flaws a lot of folks have mentioned numerous times, is going to end up unnecessarily filled with base color schemes and minor-alterations. It already is, really. That’s not engaging, and doesn’t make folks want to go out of their way to get cosmetics. Why bother getting the Battle Pass when there’s nothing interesting to hook you in on?
Other games have used similar systems you’ve proposed to great effect. It promotes customization, rather than stifling it, which is exactly how you get people excited about cosmetics. If I can buy a really cool looking armor set, and then make small modifications to the paid color scheme and make it my own, that is a way more rewarding and compelling experience. Why would I want to buy just another base color with slight changes? There’s no incentive there, since it doesn’t really change much of anything. But something like this, where, for example, you could buy a fantastic metallic, textured coating and apply it selectively to your armor. That’s a pretty good reason to put money forward and pick up cosmetics.
Currently, the system just isn’t very good at selling itself. Customization, interest, and player involvement drives cosmetics. Even in games where you can’t get as granular in changing colors, successful paid cosmetics comes from player-involve systems that offer good choices.
I’ll repeat here what I said in the reddit post.
This is the bare minimum of what the armor coating system should have been.
I personally like the coating system and the variety it can offer more than primary, secondary and highlight colours. Im looking forward to where it can go in the future. However I do think we need more initial free options not connected to th BP. So perhaps just more standard colours to start. Though I do like the idea of customizing all parts of a coating i know I’d rather spend the time playing, as I dont get much time to play these days.
Same goes for armour too.
Right now a core issue with the coatings are their restrictions to specific armour cores. which makes it even more limiting than just availability from the BP and Store.
Bumping because this 100% deserves recognition.
Jesus christ do you actually think this is feasible? That is the most complex system I’ve ever seen in a game
How so? And, for that matter, which system are you referring to; the current one, or the suggested one?
Me too. I spent quite a bit on Warframe and it had a similar monetization system with the color palette.
The current system 343i uses locks players out of being able to change the base colors of the spartan. The system I’d like to see is one where we could select parts of the core we’d like to edit. Currently there’s nothing we can change which allows 343i to charge $5 for a different shade of red…
That’s what I was thinking. Themed palettes that could be a seasonal release with a potential for textures or patterns to be unlocked through the battle pass as legendary level 90-100 rewards. I feel like 343i, with something like this, would have a system that provides a potential to create interesting content.
Just some kind of conformation from 343i would be a huge step int he right direction. I’d be perfectly fine if 343i publicly addressed the issue and said they’re going to work on it, but it would take one to two years. As long as they have it planned I wouldn’t feel so put off by the current shop. I actually feel bad about buying the BP the way things are now. I want to feel good when I buy something, not like I’m being scammed. Charging $5 for a color, or $10 for a kit of an armor coating you can’t apply anywhere outside of just really feels like I’m being scammed or lowballed. If they had the color system I suggested I’d actually be more willing to look around the shop and feel less remorse about making a purchase for an HCS team I support. I don’t think I’ll be supporting the game financially going forward. It just doesn’t feel right. When I play Halo, I want to feel right.
While you make good points I feel they can still achieve something to this effect. In an engine like UE4/5 you can apply properties to a 3D model and create a blueprint that will allow you to dynamically change the model’s base paint, texture, and pattern. They can all be applied as layers that overlay one another. There wouldn’t be much of an increase in disk size either as they’re not adding new models, just changing the appearance of the model.
Color: Red
Texture: Worn
Pattern: Stripes
The way this would work is the 3D model will first have a color applied. The texture will then be overlayed on top of the color material. Depending on the material like worn a gradient map can be used with certain values having different opacity levels to achieve the desired effect. Other textures will be affected by the way it responds to lighting, and patterns will be the final layer that will either blend with the color, or overlay the color entirely for more unique patterns taking on an entirely different appearance.
The application isn’t that difficult depending on how they built their game engine. They can design a different module that only applies to the custom coating and is saved to the spartan when selected behaving like the other cores do. Maybe it’s harder than I’m lead to believe, but after spending quite a bit of time on UE4/5 and experimenting with 3D modeling I really feel like it can be done.
That would be pretty cool to see. An area where you can customize Master Chief. I don’t think it will happen due to how iconic his character is, but man I think that’d be cool.
This is pretty much exactly what I wanted from color customization for the better part of a decade now. You can understand my frustration where such a system has already been made, but only developers have access to it. I am so glad someone else had the same vision and managed to put together a visual.
I really hope the current system gets changed and this seems like a great way of doing it! I have used the same colour scheme for over 10 years and it suck not being able to use it in Infinite closest thing to it at the moment is in a HCS Armour Kit and it not worth £8 when I don’t even follow Esports.
Its crazy to me that this is the most expansive armour customisation in any Halo game in years and 90% is locked behind a pay wall.
