A choice-based Campaign?

Hello Halo Waypoint users. I have recently come up with an idea for Halo 4 that seemed quite interesting. That is why I want to share it with you within this thread. Would you mind having Halo 4’s campaign be based around some of the decisions that you make as you progress? You may at some points be given an option to make multiple choices and they will influence the style of Halo 4’s campaign. Each decision you make will have its own benefits, disadvantages, and will change the narrative of the storyline to some degree. For example, I will share two scenarios which lead you open to multiple choices for the player to make:

> Chief will come up to a point were he will have to choose between serving as a reinforcement for either a group of marines or a group of Elites. If he chooses to help one, the other will likely die. The Chief may be tempted to save the marines out of dedication and loyalty to his own species. But he also knows that the Elites have better weaponry and are superior fighters; because of that, they will likely aid him more.

> Chief now has to choose to either accept the testimony of Cortana or a Forerunner AI who promises to help him. While the chief knows that Cortana is more trustworthy, he knows that she will not as knowledgeable as Forerunner tech as this particularly “shaky” Forerunner AI character.

Like I previously stated, these decisions will affect how many enemies you fights, what supplies you will find, what allies you will have fighting with you, and how the narrative of the storyline progresses.

What do I think? I think these could be a very interesting touch to the campaign if done right. It could expand the depth of the campaign, it could make the player feel enveloped within the story, and could increased the replay-ability of the campaign. So what do you think of having choices such as these placed with Halo 4’s campaign?

I’d like there to just be one epic campaign that everyone plays. But that’s just my opinion. I like your ideas but I wouldn’t like it to be in Halo 4.

No. I’d rather Halo 4 concentrate on telling a solid story. Choice based narratives always fall a little short.

I like it for the most part, only I think these decisions should only effect gameplay situations, not the path that the story takes. If Halo was an RPG, I might rethink it.

The path that the story takes might be a good idea for a spin-off though.

No. The Halo story is always followed with books. If we had a choice-based story, we couldn’t have books. Unless we invent choice-based books.

It would be a lot harder to jump in right in the middle but i do think it could work if it only lasted for that mission such as the marines go a separate way at the end or something

those exist

Your ideas are great, but I don’t think they would fit Halo.

Which are?

Why does this sound like, Mass Effect: Halo 4?

Grasslands and primordium are the 2 primary books being looked at for halo 4.

It could be done on one or two missions. For example in Halo 3, you could play as an Elite on the mission ‘The Covenant’ and take a different route and none of the story would have changed. Something as simple as that where the Master Chief always goes one way but the characters go separate ways - That’s the only way I see it working in a Halo game.

KOTOR and KOTOR 2 anyone?

Those aren’t choice-based books. Those are books. I don’t think a book where the story depends on our choices exists yet.

While the idea is pretty neat, I don’t think it will work well.
Main reason: this game will be telling a story that’s not only influencing its sequels, but also is embedded in a larger universe. Giving players options that will cause for different storylines is not a good option in such cases.

Sure, it works with Mass Effect, but that’s because that entire universe was supposed to work like that. It simply doesn’t quite work well with shooters.

I’d say giving us players a more free approach to go through certain levels would be a better thing to do.

I don’t have names but I used to read them all the time.

At the bottom of the page it would say like

Go to page 478 if you want to go down the left path or
Go to page 65 if you want to go down the right path

and if you choose the wrong one you would reach an end in the book

Peter in reading one in one family guy episode and he screams “Lois I didn’t take my finger off the page!”

Sorry, mis-read the post.

Also, there was a horror-book series called “Goosebumps”. They had some books where you chose the ending.
