In Halo 2, the BR shot spot on, the hit detection was immediate. With the sniper, you had to lead your shots.
They switched these in Halo 3, they made it so you had to lead your BR shots, and not your sniper shots.
I honestly don’t remember what they did with it in Halo Reach.
Personally I think not leading shots was way better for the BR as it is used a lot, and this just gives a lot more chances for the game’s netcoding to mess up and lag to cause little annoyances and differences. Instant hit detection makes this kind of stuff happen less I think.
I’m hoping for full on hitscan a la Reach. I like the feeling of my shots hitting as soon as I pull the trigger. It’s a sci-fi shooter, I don’t like worrying about bullet travel.
Hitscan is simply better. Yeah, some people in high-level games may “suffer” due to some supposed reduction in the skill gap? So what? That is infinitely preferable to even slight lag, not least because the latter issue would affect all games.

I think your assumptions are baseless. I do not know of any competitive gamers who dislike hitscan. Who have you ever heard complaining about it? Where have you heard of this skill gap argument?
It is necessary for XBL. It could be removed for LAN in a vacuum or standalone game but would change how core mechanics work from one mode to another in Halo.

Have you ever asked anyone who plays games that use projectile systems combined with good server support? Take a look at something like Tribes: Ascend; apparently it’s still got some quirks with resynching if people try to rapidly change direction in mid-air, but for the most part it’s able to support clean hit detection with slow-moving projectiles fired at players moving upwards of 200mph. Those games thrive on stuff like that.
