The A button is now the B button?
and now to go back you have to press A?
and if i try to check last game stats i have to press Y?
and if i accidentally press X it opens the Y menu?

(To my knowledge) There are two places that could be impacting your controller layout. In the settings menu of Infinite, near the bottom, there is a section where you can remap the specific functions of buttons. Check there and make sure something didn’t happen to change around all your buttons.
You can remap your controllers buttons at the operating system level, which will impact more games than just Infinite. To check this I believe you go into your Xbox settings → Accessories → Controller, and in their you can make sure your buttons aren’t switched around.
If you have an elite controller, there’s an extra main button that “switches controller profiles” as well. You may have accidentally taken yourself out of your primary configuration on accident

Alright I’ve found more information.
Steam did and update between last night and this morning.
I used the xbox accessories application from the windows store to configure my elite controller profiles the way i like.
I checked halo infinite controller settings; even the most meticulous details down to each and every button, thumbstick trigger, dpad, etc were all normal. there wasn’t anything out of order by appearances. something still wasn’t working right
i tried to change steam controller configuration for halo infinite thinking the update provided some misconfiguration. turns out, while trying to navigate menus in steam controller configuration, A and B buttons were reversed and X and Y buttons were reversed, and Dpad Left and Dpad Right were reversed.
How i fixed the problem in case anyone else is in the same boat:
-go to steam library
-right click halo infinite
-click properties
-click controller
-the Override for Halo Infinite drop down box was set to “default/auto”
-Just now I changing the drop down box to “Disable Steam Input” seems to have corrected the X/Y & A/B & dL&dR inversions.
its a shame because default/auto should not cause any problems.
will probably be fixed in future updates.

Sorry none of my tips were helpful since they were all in the context of XB settings 
. Happy you got it fixed though! I’d this is a widespread issue on Steam installs you might get some easy upvotes on reddit for this info if you’re a reddit person lol.
