90ms ping servers 90% of the time?

Hey guys and gals,

Hoping we can get some help here please.

It’s not my ISP, I ping 15-20 ms in other games often…

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 10 ms 10 ms 9 ms
3 14 ms 16 ms 11 ms
4 12 ms 10 ms 14 ms
5 24 ms 23 ms 23 ms
6 28 ms 27 ms 29 ms
7 38 ms 30 ms 29 ms
8 32 ms 37 ms 32 ms
9 31 ms 29 ms 27 ms
10 35 ms 31 ms 25 ms

An example of my tracert to google.com. It’s not a me issue it’s a you issue.

Can we please get an option to filter by latency? I’m pretty close to uninstalling and abandoning this franchise. I ping 20 ms to servers in Washington State on other FPS titles and I keep getting fragged behind walls etc. I enjoy the game but there are certain facets out of my control and latency is one of those.

I swear the latency was better playing older Bungie Halo titles or at least I got hit behind walls far less. My perception could be wrong but I know 90 ms is doable on dial up and 90% of the games you put me in are 90ms or higher. I ping 70 ms to the East Coast so what’s wrong here??

Please give us some control.

Edit: To those who don’t know about ping or latency, it’s a measure of how fast someone sees you vs you seeing them in First Person shooters. The lower the ping or latency the faster you see someone before they see you. Or shoot them before they shoot you.

I encourage everyone to turn on network statistics in the game. You likely didn’t lose that gun battle your ping did. We should have some control over this like we did back in 1990 lol

Sincerely,
SB

Alot of it depends on where the game servers are, and I strongly suspect the number of matches currently running on that server also effect the latency as more matches are fighting for bandwidth and time for ports to be processed.

I agree Ice. That said I’m less then 3 hrs from Microsoft headquarters. We should have a software option like most FPS shooters for the last 20 years to filter out games over a certain latency or ping. It’s super easily integrated.

We can actually buy routers and run custom firmware to fix this but we shouldn’t have to considering this has been an option in MOST FPS for the past 2-3 decades.

I genuinely feel badly, the game developers these days belittle “console” players by releasing lesser titles. We need to hold the devs accountable especially when they often charge more for console games then PC titles and provide worse support.

Appreciate your response and genuinely hope the gamers at 343 hold their bosses accountable and give us this functionality. The gamers probably want to but the bosses don’t want to allow them the resources. Hopefully I’m wrong

I should also add, I will not be giving 343 any money until we get this function. If we do, I will pay for battle passes and additional content.

Thanks again

Severe issues in Russia
I get 65ms at best, up to 170(literally unplayable)
And 60\170 seems to be switching from match to match :slightly_frowning_face:

Yeah I basically have 90 every match, yet most other games I sit at 25-30. But on halo I get some matches reach 130-200…

Either not enough servers (doubt it) over loaded servers (doubt it) or lack of players and it forces people in other servers for faster lobbies (probably)

But you still get 26ms servers that have desync issues, some people dont take damage sometimes is a common one. Had a 32ms fiesta and 2 rockets did 0 dmg right at the feet.

Personally I think it’s a crossplay issue for desync and just pushing fast lobbies

thank you for posting this. I’m sure it has been addressed already in other threads on the forum, but how has 343 not addressed this yet…? this is pathetic and makes me not even want to play the game. I have recorded so many clips of this happening to me and getting me killed.

if it truly is a server problem, and is being causes by routing people into the same server for faster game matching, why the **** would 343 think that is a good idea? I’m sure majority of players wouldn’t mind waiting an extra 30 seconds to minute to find a match if it meant not having to deal with this non-sense

Use this to test your latency to Microsoft’s Azure servers. There’s no server in my state in the US, so I get 80-150ms ping from having to connect to one of two states halfway across the country. My personal ping is 15-20ms. It’s Microsoft’s fault, not 343 directly.

Thanks for the response Air, I wasn’t aware that everything was going through MS’s Azure servers. It does seem weird there’s no server for Western Canada either.

MS/343, is there any way of getting a Western Canadian server please? If not, are there efforts being made to give us a way to at least connect to the lowest latency servers more frequently? I just uninstalled this game because the high latency makes this game much less enjoyable:

For those who don’t understand about ping and how it affects your gameplay there’s a nice youtube vid I came across which shows a bit about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB0Vj9_c234

Here’s another breakdown of latency: https://www.optimum.com/internet/what-latency

With really good dial up some players used to be able to get 90 ms (milliseconds) on a 56kbps modem (think fax sound dialing up to the internet over a phone line)

I live in Argentina and I am forced to play on NA servers. 90ms would be a blessing.
I have 150/200/400/490 in some cases.

200+ is unstable jitter/latency/packet loss. I imagine 300+ being completely unresponsive, teleporting around, 8 back smacks to kill, getting stuck in the air off a man cannon, and being dragged straight down every time you jump. That’s unbearable. If you go to jump over the water to grab the energy sword or hammer on that one 4v4 map, I bet you end up in the water every time.

I feel for anyone who has to play over 200 ms. It’s a big reason why I put this post together. To highlight for those who aren’t aware they should be looking at it but also to get a conversation going to see how we can get the devs onboard with coming up with a solution. It’ll be a better experience for all if we can play at lower ping, it’s really simple.

Don’t get me wrong though I still want to get the opportunity to play gamers overseas. It’s fun from time to time, just not all the time such as your talking about.

Weird. Sounds like it has to be somewhat on your end. I am always at 30ms and in AZ.

Not me or my connection Jones. I’m more inclined to believe it’s an Azure MS issue (like Air spoke of above), but 343 who is owned by MS should be able to pull a few strings to get some better connects on the West Coast.

Here are my latencies on the closest Azure servers to me:

Region Average Latency (ms)
West US (California) 96 ms
West US 2 (Washington) 98 ms
Canada Central (Toronto) 107 ms

My latency to several servers in LA California are under 50 ms which is farther geographically then MS’s Seattle server:
This is to Comcast Seattle: (speedtest.net)
PING ms

And to LA:

I can do ping tests and tracerts to several servers to show you it’s an MS/343/Halo issue and not a me and my connection problem. The fact there are several people complaining about it clearly shows it’s not on the user’s end.

My connection also has very low jitter (ping variances when going from hop to hop, think server to server)

Consider yourself lucky to have good routing and you’re close to your closest Azure server.

For giggles I did a test to a server in Phoenix AZ and here were my results: (better then the 90ms I get in Halo all the time)

Again it’s not an issue locally to me or even with my ISP or even their peer partner (first hop outside your ISPs network where your ISP hands off the traffic).

Unfortunately I can’t provide hyper links or pics in this forum to make it look better

Thanks for the like Jones and if you ever want info on this stuff I love sharing it. I’m a long time gamer sadly sometimes overly passionate about the message I deliver.

End of the day I want us all to be able to enjoy games the way the devs meant for them to be played.

I quickly did a ping test to microsoft.com and figured I would share too:

(if you ever want to check open your windows based PC and hit the windows-R button to bring up the search/run bar. Type: “CMD” minus the quotes then press enter and it should bring you to a DOS prompt (Black window with a blinking cursor)
Once there you can do a ping to the server like I did below or you can do type tracert in place of ping to do a traceroute to the server you want to connect to.)

ping www.microsoft.com -t

I’m on a new passion, I want to help educate our new age gamers how we can research this stuff and hold the game devs accountable. If they say 4 or 5 bars (full bars) is all green and great it should be below 50 ms not below 100 ms. 100 ms is dialup.

Dialup isn’t broadband and we shouldn’t be okay with it.

If you have any questions fire away I want people to get up to speed and understand this stuff.

I’ve had really weird latencies. Just a moment ago I finally managed to play BTB but the latency was literally 254 ms. It didn’t actually look that laggy in the game itself, except with very slight rubber banding and obviously I couldn’t kill anyone.

They implemented a solution for most people in MCC. For the life of me I can’t work out why it wasn’t in this game at launch. They need to allow players to filter servers. Like MCC they may require players to select at least 2-3, but the current system can’t continue without majorly -Yoink!- off players. Playing SWAT on 232ms ping shouldn’t be a thing…

Hey Briz, I think it comes back to getting gamers into games as fast as possible because most gamers don’t even know about latency or ping. I understand the why however I don’t understand why they wouldn’t implement and supplemental piece for the gamers who know what latency is and why it matters.

Again I understand why it’s in its current iteration. Those of us that understand ping/latency/jitter/packet loss and the affects it has on our gameplay make up a very small minority. Like I said before, I’m making it my mission to get people educated so devs and more importantly publishers are held to a higher standard so we can actuallyu get AAA titles that aren’t a BETA launch let alone a Beta for the games lifecycle.

Console gamers pay more for the same titles and more then back when we had to buy CDs. We do not see any savings for this so we should expect their R&D/Programming has more revenue to do a better job and if they don’t… The EA, MS, Acitivision need to get hurt in their pocket books.

Going back to why I would never pay for a skin, it doesn’t add any funtional gameplay. Maps, Weapons, Modes, Servers!!! all add to the value and are things I will happily pay for.

Thanks again for taking the time to read my rants, I know I know I need to curb my enthusiam (Larry David :))

Nearly all my games are 80-100. Game feels like crap when it’s like that

Something is definitely off here. Since the launch of the game I’ve no ping (that I noticed at the time) that was higher than mid 40s.

Starting this week every single game has been solid 80ms ping.

It’s not me. My internet (business class btw) is rock solid. Other games do not experience this issue.

My feedback is that 80ms ping is unacceptable for ranked games.

Hoping for some updates on this.

80 ms for a FPS is horrible again feeling for those overseas trying to make it passable with 200-400 ms.
I even went as far to install on my PC and have similar latency for that too.

Still have not reinstalled on my Xbox as there are much better games with better coding and network latency.

If 343 are using Azure servers can we please get some that are closer to home or give us the ability to filter by latency? Maybe a form of a game browser? And if you do provide us with a filter option please make it by ping NOT 4 BARS!!!. Unless you give us a definitive legend stating 50 ms or better is 4 bars (as opposed to it being 100 ms currently)
