My Xbox download speeds have never been great, it takes hours to download things just shy of 1 gig.
Now is this 8GB download for multiplayer MANDATORY? Or perhaps does it work like Battlefield 3 where I have to switch discs. Because I didn’t mind getting off my butt to switch discs.
If I HAVE to download it then I swear to god, I will not be a happy camper. No online games for like 4 days. My Xbox will have to beat itself to download it, and worst of all Halo 4’s release date will be November 10th for me.
Care to link where it says that you are required to download something for multiplayer matchmaking?
It is mandatory (i’m pretty sure). However, you install it using the 2nd disc that comes in the box, you don’t have to download it online. Installing a disc takes only a couple minutes so no worries.

Not a download, but there are 8 GBs of content required for multiplayer.

It’s mandatory, from a second disc as Flame stated. As for how long it will take to download, seeing as it’s a whopping 8 gigs it’ll take anywhere between 9-15 minutes.
Coming from someone who plays many a RPG I install most of my games to my hard drive, and the 6.5GB Dragon Age: Origins took about 9-10 minutes to download from experience.
So, no 2 1/2 hour downloads like for games actually bought from the Marketplace.
> Care to link where it says that you are required to download something for multiplayer matchmaking?
Ahh but to people who aren’t as educated like myself, installing wasn’t any different from downloading.
But anyways yeah it’s an install from your second disk so it won’t take too long

Thank Christ you are a patron saint my good sir.

I was just like, “Wait, an 8GB download? That’s WAY too ridiculous!” but an install from a second disk makes much more sense!

Actually, now that I think about it, Battlefield does do the same thing.

As does Forza.
I don’t get this, I have to download 8gig stuff to play multiplayer?, or is that only for the players installing the game to their harddrive. I own a 4gig xbox slim…

Here is what I know. There are 2 discs with the purchase of halo 4. The first disc has your halo 4 campaign. Your second disc has your halo 4 multiplayer. You cannot play the multiplayer off of the second disc though. You need to install the multiplayer onto your xbox or other compatable memory and then you can play the multiplayer off of the first disc.
It’s a quick install off of the second disc. It seems you may have to go out and get a flashdrive or even upgrade to a hardrive with more memory to be able to play multiplayer.

If you’re looking for a cheap solution to your issue, seeing as you’re required to install I have a few suggestions.
Cheapest suggestion? Get a large flash drive.
Personal suggestion:
Go out and buy one of the HDDs for the older model of Xbox 360, hell a 20GB will do the job.
Simply take the HDD out of the gray casing and it will plug in to your Xbox 360 Slim like a normal hard drive, though it will take a little more effort to plug in correctly it’s a good economic solution.
I didn’t feel like actually buying a 250GB console, so I bought the 4GB and simply stripped down my 120GB hard drive and plugged it in. Everything has been fine thus far and it’s been a year.
There are a few videos on Youtube showing you how to do it.

Wow thanks man, how much would either the large flash drive or the older HDD cost? and is the second method completely safe?, is it pretty much the same as buying an HDD for the slim?.

Dude you’re either gonna have to to buy a 8GB USB stick or upgrade to a bigger Hard drive

A typical 8GB flash drive will cost about $8. Though 8GB flashdrives are never 8GB exactly, so you’re better off getting something like a 12GB or higher.
A 16GB flash drive will cost you anywhere from $13-$22 dependent on where you get it from and obviously brand.
As for the second method being safe, yeah it is. 360 HDDs are literally PC hard drives designed for an Xbox 360, same plug-in and everything. I’ve built my fair share of PCs, the only common problem you’ll have is the slight potential of static damage. But, that usually only happens with CPUs and such. Which, you will not be messing with at all. So, short of you dropping the HDD or smashing it somehow you’re good.
You risk maybe skinning your knuckle a slight bit on the metal in the HDD port of the 360 if you have big hands, but that’s about it.
I’ve done it myself, and for a few friends. It’s a cake walk and, in my opinion a better solution than buying a 250GB or 320GB hard drive if you’re not going to use it for much else.
At Gamestop a 20GB HDD for the older 360 will cost you about $25 refurbished, a 120GB will cost you about $50.
Just follow a guide on Youtube, once more and it’s a cake walk.
The only difference between the slim HDD and the older model, is the older model doesn’t have the black casing around it so it’s a little harder to get in and out of your console. They’re the exact same thing, only with different cases. Remove the cases, and they’re the same thing.
I’m glad i bought the 250GB Halo: Reach console now. Didn’t even know they did 4GB hard drives, seems a little too low.
I’m installing both to increase the disc life span and speeding up load times.
It’s an install from disc 2 and it isn’t required. You can just play multiplayer off disc 2.
4 GB is pretty low, but I would imagine its easy to manufacture and some people simply dont use the Xbox for gaming and big downloads, so I guess they felt making one larger for the stock console wasnt worth it, I am not sure :(. My GF had to upgrade her Xbox as well from the 4 GB to the 250 here recently.
