On reddit, Bravo has been actively responding to threads. Someone wrote a thread requesting FFA to contain 6 players instead of 8 and Bravo responded with the following(NOTE: This response was from 2 days ago):

Today, we’re adding Empire, Fathom, Coliseum, and Truth, all of which played really well (subjectively) at 8 players during playtests with average to high skilled players, so the current decision was to stay at 8 for the time being to see how these maps played in the wild, community reaction to bigger spaces like Coliseum, etc.

We’re gonna playtest both 6 and 8 player some more, and you should please continue to provide feedback as we aim to strike the right balance. Actually 6 players would work incredibly well on Orion. I was constantly getting shot out of spawn when Orion was in the map rotation for FFA. No one went for Sniper and no one went for Damage Boost because of the bad spawns and because of how many players were on map.
I just got ranked in FFA as Onyx, I have to say that sometimes it felt like I ran in to players too fast without much of a chance at fighting back. I’ve experienced spawning with a player right in front of me for an easy victory which is not fun. Having 6 players would work out perfectly, I think it would improve overall flow of the games and reduce unnecessary frustrations.

This^^^^^. I made a thread about this topic a couple weeks ago. 8 man is a problem no matter how they look at it. It’s a complete cluster -Yoink-, way to chaotic. The problem isn’t the size of the maps it’s the way the maps are designed along with player speed and amount of playe in FFA. I read a response from one of the devs when this topic was brought up a while back and his response was “We want it to be in you’re face action” so we are play testing too see if 8 man works on other maps" before we drop it to 6. Just change the Damn thing to 6 players and let us keep all the Damn maps so we have more to play on, plus I don’t want it to constantly to be “in your face action”…I just want action. I know these people are the professionals and they made the game but it blows my mind seeing some of the poor decisions they made in this game. Don’t get me wrong,I like this game but I would love it more if they would put the stuff “we” want in the game instead of what" they "want. Then I would be playing this more than I play Fallout 4.
