I’ve reached onyx for the first time in Halo 5 since launch pats self on back. It wasn’t easy, especially because most of the time I was with randoms and because I usually didn’t get to Halo much til near the end of the month, so the next season started before I could put time into ranking up. But this time, I started early May and put together a solid, competitive, talkative team. Anyway, here’s what I learned along the journey in arena slayer:
communication is key
Since onyx and diamonds, maybe even a champion or two, usually party up together. You will be facing a fireteam of at least 2-4 people every game. That means you need to communicate, call outs are key and make the difference between winning and losing. A skilled team with no communication will usually lose to a average team with lots of communication.
you need to be versatile
You need to be the guy that can fill in any role, use any weapon, and play any play style. Situations change at a whim in slayer and you need to be able to adapt to it so you need to bee able to play out of your comfort zone.
you need to lead
There’s no taking a back seat and letting things just “work out”. You need to tell your help your teammates by not suggesting, but telling them where to do and what to do. You are like a player coach, lead by example while encouraging them along the way.
you need to pull your own weight
chances are you will be one of the highest ranked player on your team, because of that, you should really live up to your rank. people expect you to do well, going negative k/d in arena slayer is unacceptable for an onyx consistently. lower ranked players usually need to be carried to a victory, as an onyx, you’ll do the carrying.
you need to be selfless
The higher you rank up. the more competitive games get, the more teamwork a team needs. You need to play for your team, there’s no more it’s “all about me” mentality anymore. Back up struggling players, give power weapons to those confident using them, generally make everyone around you better. Sometimes it’s better to let your teammate grab the OS or give your teammate a power weapon instead of you running around with a sniper and rockets.
