4v2 in slayer

So, my roommate and I were playing a Slayer match and it started out as a 3v4 which was not that bad. The system then kicked the 3 person on our fireteam and did not add anybody in to fill the void. We got wrecked royally and we are both higher level players. My question is, why didn’t the system add another player into our fireteam after the other guy dropped out.?

This is intentional. In ranked playlists like Team Slayer, “join in progress” is turned off to ensure that no player gets thrown in to a disadvantaged ranked match. However, the side effect of this is that if people quit from ranked matches, then that team will be down for the rest of the game. The game tries to discourage quitting by banning players who do, especially in ranked, but it’s not a perfect system (no system is). It’s worth noting that after someone has quit from your team, you can quit without worrying about a ban (you still take a loss and lose CSR, but this is essential to prevent cheating the ranking system).

Also, the game never starts 3v4; it will always find 8 players for team Slayer. But after all players are found, if someone turns off the game before the match countdown, then the match will start 3v4 because it was too late to find a new player.

It makes sense. It wouldn’t be right for someone to join in late and basically get a free win in a ranked match

I think it’s more likely that people who JIP in end up losing. But it’s along the same lines of thinking. It wouldn’t be right for someone to lose some rank because they joined the losing team through JIP. Everyone starts every ranked match on the same footing.

I agree. It goes both ways.

That does make a lot of sense, now that I think about it in that way. Thank you for explaining.

Look at it from the other side:

Nobody likes joining a game that’s halfway over or joining a team that has no hope of winning. People spent months complaining about Join In Progress (JIP), and 343 made updates to the matchmaking system to make it less prevalent. A solo queue player would rather join at the beginning of the game than in the middle of one. While it is annoying to be down 2 players and losing by 20 points, joining a game where you are 3v4 and down 20 points is arguably less fun.

In this scenario, it would have been safe for you to drop out of the game as well. The new matchmaking update does not penalize dropouts if someone has already left the game.

What about a system where you join in progress, but the result of the match will not affect your rank regardless of it your team wins or loses? That way it would still allow teams that were down a person to have a fighting chance once the team gets back to the full amount of people, it also wouldn’t affect the person who joined late ranks, and it would allow people to get into games faster.

i am curious about how this new true skill 2 system works when people quit it. Like what if I am predicted to win a match, but then a teammate or two quit out. Does this new system recalculate the odds of me winning the match? Especially since if you win a match you are expected to win you only gain 1 csr, but if you lose that match you are down 15.

In qualifying it’s that way, do not get more people to your team, this was annoying in halo 4, since it affected your competitive range

I mean, while it’s nice if I have nothing to lose from joining a ranked game, it would kinda suck if I have nothing to gain if my game play contributes directly to the win (top kills or whatever). So I wouldn’t have any particular motivation to play up to my full potential for the betterment of the team I joined. With that in mind, I’d rather not join a ranked game in progress if the alternative is I’m essentially playing for nothing.

As far as TS2 is concerned, it does recalculate the odds of you winning the match (almost always 0% as far as I’m concerned) when people start quitting. In that case, you’re going to lose CSR, no matter how many players are left on your team, if you lose the game. That’s the way it should be. What TS2 does (mostly) is leave your MMR alone when people start quitting on you. So while your CSR suffers for losing the game, your MMR doesn’t.

I think it would be great if someone disconnects as soon as the match starts (or during the match), if they try to search for another match, they are forced back into the match they just quit out of. Basically, you force them to finish the game regardless of what they do to avoid it.
