4 1/2 years away from Halo... impressed with MM!

Moved on from Halo after the release of H4… I found Reach frustrating and not as good as H3, for obvious reasons… but it was a decent enough game, and I had a lot of fun with friends and built good memories. H4 MM I found to be a steaming pile, and moved on. Finally tried H5 MM and I’m very impressed! All the previous frustrating components from Reach and H4 gone… armor lock, camo+radar jammer, weapon drops, loadouts, no natural weapon spawns, bloom (which was ok but liked it better without). It seems this game’s developers are finally getting back to what made it great, and dumped the aggravating, sometimes game breaking features that have plagued the game the first half of this decade. Not perfect… mostly mediocre maps, reduced radar, no team snipers for example (I don’t even bother picking up the sniper in games because I don’t get to use team snipers as practice), and I’m not sure how I feel about announced weapon spawns, but this is a hell of a lot better than the last two major releases, that’s for sure! Of course, campaign is another story, I agree with many others in that the last two campaigns are very mediocre and a letdown for a Halo game.

And I’m only a casual player, I can only imagine how more committed players have felt! I suspect I’m not the only over the years who quit the game in disappointment only to come back pleasantly surprised by what H5 MM has to offer. Anyone? Please do share your story, I curious to see how widespread my situation is.

Did you know that Halo 4’s story has actually received mostly praise from critics and players alike? Not sure of this “many” you speak of who consider Halo 4’s campaign to be a let-down.

The only game that I truly felt turned off from regarding the MMing was Reach (Armor Lock absolutely destroyed all enjoyment - I considered it game breaking), but I greatly enjoyed spending time playing custom games (without AL) within that title and it helped keep me entertained right up to the end of its’ primary life-cycle. Another massive hindrance was the level of quitting that occurred and with no JiP system for more social matches I just lost a lot of interest with the game’s MMing.

I thought Halo 4 took the right direction in a few instances for their MMing, continued down the wrong direction in a few others, plus introduced some new issues, but it still managed to be a fun title to play till the very end of its’ primary life-cycle. The poor networking and a JiP system that wasn’t very limited in it’s use (matches should never have started with unequal teams) were probably my two biggest complaints, but rarely being able to play the DLC was right up there with them.

I’ve greatly enjoyed Halo 5 and I feel that 343i made a whole heck of a lot more right decisions than wrong ones with it. I think the multiplayer is the best it’s ever been despite not having the nostalgic feeling of the original trilogy. Biggest issue to me is probably the performance of the servers, but behind that I’d say not having many expected things ready and available at release.

I like h5 a lot better then 4 and reach but its like mcc 343 forgot to give us new maps (the game is getting boring) the server’s are horrible in some games its like the other team is playing on dialup internet the heavy aim patch worked for about 3 weeks i have fun playing it but it’s either a good server or its horrendous lagging with not hit recognition i enjoy the sprint clamber and other new mechanics except Spartan charge it’s halo5 armour lock

Match Making in Reach was a joke compared to H3 and in H4 it was indisputably offensive. That -Yoink- was ripped straight out of COD. I quit playing Reach/H4 inside of 2 months. I’ve played H5 considerably longer but I still feel it to be a pile of -Yoink- shoved in a box with Halos name stamped on it and it’s a sad excuse for a Halo game. I honestly don’t think it deserves to be a Halo game. 343 may have taken steps to TRY and resolve previous issues but the damage is already done. Halos population is as low as it’s ever been and there’s no sign it will ever increase (it’s so depressing that they won’t even tell us how bad it actually is!) I’ve ripped this game countless -Yoink- holes already but since you asked I’ll indulge you

  • No custom emblems - Redesigned weapons (Not for the better) - The -Yoinking!- BR 85 - ADS (On every weapon, let alone in a Halo game) - A worthless pre game lobby - Virtually no playlists or game modes - Warzone - REQ PACKS, thanks to Warzone!!! - No vehicles in Arena, thanks to Warzone!!! - No meaningful progression - Confusing ranking - Seasonal rank resets - Unbalanced match making - Horrendous map design - Map remixes of horrendous maps - Armor abilities…still - HUNDREDS of worthless armor sets - HUNDREDS of worthless emblems - HUNDREDS of worthless weapon and vehicle variants for Warzone that get in the way unlocking a HANDFUL of decent armor sets but those are unlocked with REQ packs and REQ packs are naturally tied to Arena to further promote Warzone which I give ZERO -Yoinks!- ABOUT!!!And on and on and on. 343 has made it abundantly clear that there doin -Yoink- their way now and it shows. “343s Halo” will never be real Halo to me. They changed every single aspect of this game into something that feels, looks and sounds completely alien.

OP, I’m glad your enjoying your time with H5 but there isn’t a single aspect of this game that I love. The newer generation of gamers probably feel right at home. But some of us, who have played this series longer than 343 has even existed, feel -Yoink- on and cast aside. I’m not saying Halo shouldn’t change or evolve. I just think it should do so in a way that honors the legacy, not destroys the foundation and buries it.

Admittedly I take a very long time to reach any kind of judgment about a game. Heck, I was half way through the life cycle of Reach before I realized how much of H3 I really didn’t like. And now here we are a year and a half into H5 and I’m only now starting to see just how much I dislike thrust and all the motion mechanics that are based off of it. The ranking system in this game is extremely suspect. You may not find that to be the case, or you may need month after month after month to realize it, as I did, but it’s just a whole sale return to the flawed methodology and manipulation vulnerability of Halo 3. The aiming in this game, much talked about, is something I still can’t wrap my head around. I refuse to be that guy who lets himself off the hook for bad performance by crying “Heavy Aiming!!!” but I also can’t explain in any other way the impossibility of hitting a target in this game. Then there’s RNG unlocks. I’m indifferent but a lot of people find that to be a serious let down. Some people dislike the maps, but I don’t. Some people are frustrated with the absence of some of the old game types, but I say sometimes less is more. The one truly hopeful feature of H5 mm is Warzone. Like the rest of Halo, it’s brilliant and deeply flawed all at the same time, but I hope that it turns out to be the real future of multiplayer. The rest of it just feels really “been there, done that” to me.

I definitely like Halo 5 more than Halo 4.
Halo 4 wasn’t even Halo, more like CoD.

I completely agree- I haven’t been so addicted to a game since Halo 3, I’ve played nothing but Halo 5 since it launched. I didn’t like the Armor Abilities in Reach, and Halo 4 was the first time I lost interest in Halo PVP and started playing other FPS multiplayer.
It certainly isn’t perfect, it has definite flaws, but for me it is a return to the Halo that I loved, updated with faster movement and expanded movement options giving a greater range of tactical options.

Really? I’ve looked at a lot of reviews lately and they were all so-so on H4’s campaign. I thought it was decent but a letdown compared to the original trilogy, and ultimately had room to be a lot better. H5’s campaign tho is another story, fighting the prometheans over and over got kinda stale.

But there were some maps given were free yes? Who knows, there is plenty of time left in the life cycle, maybe there’ll be some maps added yet. I haven’t had much of a problem with connection at all.

No opinion on the spartan charge, but people keep getting me with the ground pound lol it’s getting annoying but I’m cool with it.

Sorry to hear you’re not digging it. Holding out any hope for H6 lol? I started with H3 and compared to Reach and H4 I think this is a lot better but still falls short of what it could bet. One thing I agree with you on is the maps, H3 had some awesome maps and most of these maps don’t play as well - although there’s a few decent ones. No vehicles in arena, I didn’t think of that, good point. VERY good point on the pregame lobby, it surprisingly takes a lot away from the experience. I’m actually going to make a post focused mostly on that.

That’s exactly how I felt. On a side note, that reminds me of the SAW - I thought it was horrible as a starting weapon (again, CoD) but I like it’s role now as a power weapon of sorts. Loadouts and weapon drops were game breaking for me, this coming from someone who grudgingly endured through Reach’s armor lock, camo to salvage what I thought was a decent, but far from it’s potential, game.

Sorry that came out so salty. When something hits a nerve I can’t help it. That’s really where I’m at with H5 though, and you did ask. I truly want to think that H6 will be the game we’ve all been waiting for. I can’t help but think the direction 343 took with 4 and 5 will carry over to 6.

I reread your first post and you pointed out more positive improvements past Reach and H4 then I initially acknowledged. H5 is a step up from Reach and definitely H4 in terms of MP. I thought Reach and H4s only enjoyable experiences were their campaigns. That and H4 was one of the best looking games on 360. H5 is fun when your not pulling your hair out from ranking issues or getting REQ PACKS full of crap I’ll never use, but misses the mark as a whole. H3 was Bungies Hit (I still like H2 better) so maybe 343 can do the same with H6. It won’t be easy but anything is possible.

The map remix concept doesn’t bother near as much as the over all map aesthetics. There’s entirely too much urban/industrial themes used. There are a few standouts, but even H4s maps were better visually. From a technical standout H5 graphics are impressive, but again, its the direction that looses me.

When I say H5 isn’t worthy of being a Halo game it’s because I don’t think the magic of Halos original uniqueness has been captured. Without “Halo” on the box It could easily be taken for it’s own IP.

Hope this helps more then the last post. I’ll be looking for next thread!

I’m surprised the req packs bother you that much. My opinion is that they’re mostly irrelevant, as I’ve hardly played warzone myself. Reach’s armor system was def. better though, and I agree this system could be much better, even though it doesn’t bother me a whole lot. I guess you’re a big fan of customization, and this system kinda ruins that for you?

I haven’t had any issue with ranking even though I’ve seen a lot of complaints about it… goes up when I win and down when I lose. Then again I’m only high gold/low plat so maybe it’s more of an issue for higher ranked players?
