343's vision of Multiplayer

Hello! I’ve been posting this idea here and there and I thought it was time I brought it up on the official website:

“A lot of what we love about Halo comes from the sotry and the universe - that sense of place. That’s something that has really been lacking on the multiplayer side. You have all your story and meaning in the campaign, and then you jump into mulitplayer and just kill dudes. None of it really matters.” -Josh Holmes on Halo’s Multiplayer.

I’m excited that story is going to be introduced into multiplayer, and that 343 is looking to make the multiplayer more immersive for players. We’ve all seen the in-game footage of 4’s MP, but what I’m looking forward to is what’s going to happen between those matches.

Going off of this interview in gameinformer’s #229 issue (old I know), having the multiplayer levels actually be holodecks filled my mind with possibilities of what could become the whole MP experience…

• 1) Since the MP is taking place on Infinity, make it so that you, as your spartan avatar, starts off waking up in your bunk and after a brisk breifing of how the MP works you can then freely walk around the ship. This way, it doesn’t feel like you’re just sitting in a disconnected lobby and that it’s more than just a game mode.

• 2) Instead of different gametypes that you simply select in a menu, have the gametypes be represented as different holodecks (slayer holodeck, skirmish holodeck, etc.) that your spartan can walk to.

• 3) Imagine now meeting up with your friends “in person” opposed to joining each other’s lobbies. Now you can show off that new armor upgrade from more than just one angle, and once you’re done showing off you and your crew can bounce to one of the holodecks to do work.

• 4) That being said, the armory can now become something you can walk up to after reaching a new rank in one of the holodecks. Complete with a jargon heavy marine who throws back-handed complements on your newest purchases.

• 5) We all love showing off that awesome moment in our matches. The theater can become a closed off section of the ship where you and 3 of your buds can watch those great moments together, instead of uploading the file to your fileshare, forcing your friends to go to said fileshare, download your file, and then watch by themselves without your commentary. Obviously, the controls would revert to the camera once the video has started.

• 6) The challenges would then become a challenge board that you can see in the main lobby of Infinity, with groups being able to post messages either privately to their group members or publicly if they’re looking to recruit or challenge other clans.

• 7) Importantly, I’m not suggesting that you literally have to walk kilometers each way to get from here to there, but a not to big, not to small area that you can traverse would be a great replacement to the menu system.

• 8) For all of the people saying, “I just want to jump in and get straight to the action,” you can have a computer on your desk close to where you start on Infinity that provides the regular menu that can provide quick access to the online play.

– I think these ideas would help with immersing the player into the multiplayer and not just being an option that allows you to just kill some dudes.

– What do you guys think? I want to hear your opinions from all angles.

love it, but it will never happen :frowning:
there is a play station game with it though

The story and realism should not matter whatsoever when playing MP, it’s actually very worrying that 343 think it should, if they are prioritising canon over gaemplay then they must have no idea what they’re doing.

Im with you on, that for the most part .

I love the halo games

But I couldn’t care less about MP and how ut ties into canon –

Great MP > Canon
All day

Although your ideas are not bad .

The idea is good but it’s so difficult to implement that it’s not probably possible to have it in Halo 4/5 or 6 i believe…

Oh and Welcome to Waypoint! =)

Welcome to Waypoint.

Problem is: too time consuming and probably not very efficient.

Thats actually something that 343 could take into consideration for the next two Halo games. But for right now, eh, I don’t see it happening.

Solid idea. If it wasn’t implemented though, I wouldn’t be too moved.

Thanks for all of the replies and welcomes! It was really interesting seeing everyone’s viewpoints on the mattter and I appreciate the feedback!

Dude, great idea. That would be amazing!

Might get annoying after a while, but it sounds like a lot of fun.

Sounds like fun, but I dont’ see this happening.

No, Halo is not as nerdy as Mass Effect.

This is sorta like the LEGO Videogames, your the Lego minifigures and you start out in a “hub” and you can walk up to walls or through doors to bring up a menu like in LEGO Star Wars you would walk through a door marked III and then you’ll be in a room full of levels having to do with Revenge of the Sith and you walk through another door to which level you wanted to play. I like this idea and I think it would be fun but the problem is you want to be on one side of the ship and then another thing you want to go to is on the other side of the ship it’d take a while to get there.

I believe halo 4 is going to be fun but i don’t know if its going to be really different from the pov of playing then the previous halo’s. Well I will see on nov.6

I would agree. The closest to immersing the MM players into any story would be immersing into a campaign style MM game, not the boring details of getting a cup of coffee while reading the battle strategies from HQ on a video display.

Invasion is the campaign style game play that MM has always needed. Unfortunately, without Elites in MM, there will be next to no chance of having any campaign style game play in MM with H4.

Invasion has been confirmed. playing as something else that will replace Elites and will also “scratch that itch” has also been confirmed.

OT: while this is really nice, and would be cool, there are many ppl out there that want to just play MM and not spend their time canonizing Halo and walking around.

lol noob move

I’m not saying that you would be spending time getting a cup of coffee. Are you serious? And the fact that you keep going back to Invasion tells me that you’re missing the point and you’re confused as to what the main idea is. This idea represents what could happen OUTSIDE of matchmaking when you’re NOT playing the actual game. Ultimately I’m suggesting that this (or whatever form of my idea) could replace the menu system without getting rid of the old system (read #8).

Unfortunatly the idea is gimiky to the point where the competitive fanbase will cry there little mlg tryhard tears all over their keyboards
