343i's story going above and beyond Bungie :)

I am a HALO fan. Remember that famous game that came out in 2001? Remember how it didn’t even have online multiplayer? Remember when it didn’t have a mystical skillgap that people pray to before bed? Halo Combat Evolved has one of the greatest metacritic scores ever (A 97, which is actually INSANE, because it is the average of every single little review for the game). Halo CE introduced us to a terrific new universe with mysterious structures, and awesome iconic enemies and weapons. With Halo 4, maybe 343 wasn’t the champ of perfect level design, and maybe there were other grievances, but they told a great story and had some true blue character development. 343 clearly does care about the Halo universe, and with all of the Halo 5 speculation about Agent Locke, oni, the storm, etc I can’t help but notice that 343i is making Halo more and more interesting to me. The way I see it, Halo 5 will have THEE BEST campaign of an fps in 2015, and possibly one of the greatest Halo campaigns. Too bad that people are ripping on the multiplayer so freaking bad. At least COD fans accept playing COD games whether they are made by Infinity ward, Trey arch, or Sledgehammer.

Edit: Wow, the trailers we got today were awesome. 343 is REALLY amping up the story of Halo 5. I’m excited for the multiplayer, but gosh I must have watched each trailer like 10 times in a row.

Completely agree. There’s a lot more of Chief’s character and Cortana’s in the last episode, along with a new cast of characters.

yes i think sarah palmer is way better than sgt johnson (no one ever in this world)… it’s a joke don’t take it too serious

Yes Dude! I continue to love Halo because 343i continues to beat out interesting story, lore that has substance and characters that you fall in love with! Everyone has their rants about game mechanics and blah blah blah but at the end of the day 343i gets an applause for investing so much into the Halo Universe as a whole and keeping us on the edge of our seats as has every great form of entertainment throughout history!

Okay, she isn’t the greatest (in fact people hate on her for being so aggressive towards Haley), but Chief and Cortanas situations led to great character development. Lasky was a pretty good supporting character, and although Captain Del Rio was an -Yoink-, he also had pretty major contributions to the story. Of course the Didact and Librarian added a ton (I mean a TON if you watch all of the terminals).

Unfortunately, more than just a few people couldn’t be bothered to go to the Waypoint app to watch them. And there were some who couldn’t watch them because no internet. So it was great character development that only a percentage of players were even able to access sadly.

You’re not wrong. Halo 4 was my favorite campaign by far simply because of the story and the acting. The level design wasn’t perfect, but neither was bungie’s. Thats more obvious now than ever after having gone through all 4 campaigns twice on MCC. Not hating on bungie in anyway, just my opinion that if bungie was still in charge, you’d have a small percentage of very vocal fans freaking out on forums about any change. For an example, look at how Reach was criticized.

It’s kinda true though regardless. I like Johnson, but he was pretty much just the sergeant from Predator and Aliens melded together. Palmer may be insufferable, but she had moments where she shines with her care for those under her command and headstrong attitude.

343 didn’t make the most badass character of all though: Sergeant Avery Johnson!!!

343 is good at story? I could get behind that, but first, I have to swallow the title. They’re better at it than Bungie? How?

I could ask what was so good about Bungie’s character development. Outside the Squad from ODST, and sans the Rookie for obvious reason, Bungie’s characters could really be said to be walking cliches. Sure, 343’s characters may not all be perfect or good, like Palmer, but I sure have an easier time believing that they are actual characters with real flaws and a personality.

Yep. The best attempt at character development that Bungie had was ODST. The 2nd best was reach, but you barely got to really know a spartan on reach before they died. The best being Jorge and they killed him off quick. I loved 343i approach to chief. He was no longer a blank slate. He had character. He had emotion. Flaws. A person you could relate to better. I rather relate to a person then be the person. for I’m me when I play multiplayer or spartan ops. But when I play campaign. I want an amazing story to be told to me. And 343I succeed in that better then Bungie ever did

343I are better at stories altogether than Bungie. Bungie’s character development was stagnant and their stories lack any long-time planning and direction. They relied too much on silent protagonists, despite the fact that some of these characters could have been greatly developed. Master Chief himself lacked development in Bungie’s games; instead, he had to be developed in the books, which Bungie ignored. On that note, Bungie constantly ignored the expanded universe and only looked at telling stories through the games. Going so far as to ignore essential details such as their being over Spartan-IIs. Not only that, but their stories didn’t have any long-term goals. Their trilogy wasn’t even planned out beforehand – hence explaining Halo 2’s awkward and disjointed ending.

Things may not be perfect as they are, but at least we’re getting characters with compelling motivations which receive development, the universe is getting deeper and more complex, and all Halo media is getting integrated into the overall story instead of being ignored or pushed to one side. Compared to 343I, Bungie were terrible at managing their universe – despite it being really good and having a lot of potential.

To be honest, Bungie did an excellent job with the base story of Halo, with a lot of assistance from Eric Nylund of course. However, when it comes to character development I must say that 343i does indeed do a better job at it than Bungie. So far the one thing Bungie has over 343i is Thel 'Vadam, who very quickly became a favorite character for many Halo fans.

ODST had some of the greatest characters in halo IMO, they went together like pbj.

AHAHAH NO!
new characters are awful, the only well developed ones are evil and hated (Osman).
enemies? You want to compare high prophets with jul and didact? Lasky with Keyes? Palmer with Johnson? S-IV with S-II?

What? Bungie created the universe, they founded it with the books, they told the story in the books way more than in game! best halo books are still their, while 343 has done kilo-V! The worst trilogy!

  1. Bungie constantly ignored the books. Ex: The Fall of Reach
  2. Bungie had nothing but one dimensional characters. Johnson was just as quotable as they came. Miranda Keyes wasn’t smart, in 3 she crashed into the ark’s control room and had a chance to kill Truth if she would’ve simply turned around and shot him. The only character that had development in their trilogy was 343 guilty spark.
  3. Neither Bungie nor 343 directly wrote those books. They commissioned writers but they didn’t give them a script and said “write this.” Kilo 5 was bad, but the forerunner trilogy wasn’t , New Blood wasn’t, and now you’ve got a short coming by Frankie and another by Joseph Staten.

Stop with the nostalgic fueled hate.

To be fair, Thel Vadam does come up as one of Halo’s most well developed characters. His transition from Covenant puppet to revolutionary was one of the best parts of Halo 2’s plot.
