In these forums many fans are asking 343 to go back to a strictly Halo 3 format for multiplayer and remove things like armor ability and sprint. As a passionate fan I like the ability to sprint and jetpack around and I think it makes the game more fun. Now when I go back and try to play Halo 3 it just isn’t as fun as Reach and feels slow and limited. However, I understand where Halo 3 fans are coming from as classic game modes were promised in Halo 4 but were not delivered. I would ask Halo 3 fans to please realize that taking away armor ability and sprint would be unfair to people who like them just as taking away classic game modes is unfair to you. So in conclusion please do not get rid of sprint, armor ability, loadouts, etc but don’t forget to have a playlist without them.
Many people are proposing 2 seperate playlists: Legendary and Infinity. If 343 is smart, they will implement this in Halo 5.

I hope so. I just get so tired of some of my fellow fans who think they are the only ones who matter and want to take away what their counterparts want! I want stuff from 3 back as well but I don’t want to play a 3like game and only that.
> classic game modes were promised in Halo 4 but were not delivered.
100% this. When I fired up matchmaking and couldn’t find “team slayer” I just assumed based on the limited play list selection that they wanted to emphasize the new game types for the first week in order to get people to at least give them a try. Yeah… not so much.
Let me ask you this question though: what would you advocate if the two play styles have toughly equivalent popularity but the combined population isn’t enough to support a robust selection of game types for two separate play lists?

I’d hate to see sprint and AAs go. But I understand why fans would want to go back to Halo 3. It was (arguably) the last good Halo. But 343 did introduce some Infinity concepts that could work great with some tweaks.

I don’t see population really being a problem as even now in Reach one cans still get a game in slayer or my personal favorite invasion, and game modes without aa such as swat. So I don’t think it will be a problem unless there is a population problem overall.

Well, i think that catering to classic will bring people back to the game. But it makes sense to think that you would need double the population to support double the number of play lists. Halo 4 clearly has population problems right now, so it makes sense to think that it would be a potential concern for Halo 5.
If they had to start consolidating markedly different play lists that had comparable popularity, how should they go about it? Its definitely a consideration.

Yessss! The name (Legendary) caught on, I much prefer it over “classic”.

Of course catering to classic will bring back players. However, not catering to players like me will make players leave. If they had to consolidate playlists then perhaps they could make it where you vote on the map and then the particular game mode, for example slayer. That way unlike other Halos you would have a lesser chance of playing a game mode you didn’t like on a map you did like. However, if you play two classics or updated in a row than the next should be the opposite so everyone gets to play what they want and no one gets regularly screwed by being outvoted by a clan. However, I think consolidating should be a last resort only.
> Of course catering to classic will bring back players. However, not catering to players like me will make players leave.
I wasn’t advocating not catering to anyone; I was only stating that catering to both is a possibility. I was genuinely asking how you would go about making the unpleasant tough decisions that they will need to make.
> If they had to consolidate playlists then perhaps they could make it where you vote on the map and then the particular game mode, for example slayer.
That answers my question, but the reaction to the consolidation of infinity slayer with slayer pro and the impending infinity/legendary consolidation tells me that it is a very unpopular solution. In effect you get a play list that isn’t effectively catering to anyone.
At least that is how it seems.
> However, if you play two classics or updated in a row than the next should be the opposite so everyone gets to play what they want and no one gets regularly screwed by being outvoted by a clan.
What about the people that just joined into the lobby to replace people that quit out after playing two games in a row? The new person now would not have choice.
Either back out of the lobby if you know you are with incompatible players or preferably reimplement the “press x to join party” system.
> However, I think consolidating should be a last resort only.
100% in agreement. I just think it probably becomes a messy necessity with two robust play lists. The franchise can recover I think, but the Halo 2 and Halo 3 days are over.

I know you weren’t advocating to not cater to anyone I was just pointing out that catering to both cannot but help to bring more players. You have a good point when it comes to just leaving the lobby and that is probably what I would do. It would also have to mean the end of quit penalties which has been a long time coming.

“Legendary” does have more of a ring to it.
> . You have a good point when it comes to just leaving the lobby and that is probably what I would do. It would also have to mean the end of quit penalties which has been a long time coming.
No, no! I meant leaving the post game lobby. You know that seven people voted slayer pro last game… probably a good chance that if you play with the same seven people it will get voted for again. Just back out of hte post game lobby and search from scratch.
Quit penalties need to be harsh but factored only given a reasonable sample size to establish a pattern of behavior that detracts from the game so as to prevent a couple disconnections or a UPS delivery resulting in getting locked out of the game or something.
Of course, right now the problem is exacerbated by people getting JIPed into lopsided games that result from the fact that you can back out of the voting menu without consequence causing games to start with less than full teams.

I understand where you’re coming from. Tweaky tweaky tweaky.

I see we have differing views on quit ban but that is a subject for a different thread. When I play Halo I want to have fun if I am not for any reason then I quit and a ban just makes me want to stop playing the game altogether. That is one I didn’t like about Bungie they were to lazy to put in join in progress or keep server lag down so decided that to counter act that they would punish us.

But the problem is that by quitting you are detracting from the experience of everyone else in the game while it attempts to find someone for JIP. Then it is also damaging the experience of the person that got JIP instead of a fresh game.
Bungie wasn’t too lazy to put JIP in. They just chose not to, as it definitely has a down side to go along with the positive. Additionally, I believe that every single Xbox live game up until this point has be peer to peer. Regardless, I know for a fact that server lag is not the issue in Halo 4 or any other Halo title because these servers do not exist.
Halo will never enjoy the mega success it had in the Halo 2 and 3 days. It was the definitive console shooter at the time. It was the only FPS that was designed from the ground up for the console market and the controllers limitations as an input device for FPS (keyboard and mouse is just better for FPS, kind of like how racing games are better when you use a steering wheel). Also many games did not include multiplayer. Pretty much every game relased today has some sort of multiplayer. Also many Halo players from the 2-3 era have left for other console focused FPS like CoD. Those factors explain the population drop.

Halo 3 maintained a robust population well after Call of Duty titles started passing it in total sales. I don’t buy that market factors explain the dearth of players for a title that sold nine million copies.
No. Halo isn’t going to get the market share it had back when Halo 3 was the top selling title on the 360. That doesn’t mean it can’t do better than THIS (hand waves at the desolate remains of the pride lands after Scar took over).
Actually… side note. The Lion King never really justified how over hunting for the hyenas somehow made Scar responsible for what could only have been a devastating drought in conjunction.

It seems like we are bound to disagree on this but like I said perhaps this discussion belongs on another thread. On second thought who is to say there couldn’t be another compromise where there is quit penalty for legendary game modes and none for updated.
I don’t see 343 compromising. It will either be Halo 3 style with partial Infinity or full blown Infinity, IMO.
