343I, please change the marines design for Halo 5

I feel (along with most of the Halo fanbase) that the Halo 2 (anniversary)/ Halo 3 marines look the best. Marines are iconic to Halo. Just like master chief’s helmet (wich I am proud 343i preserved despite changing his armor a bit), or the Covenant’s purple/blue colour scheme. The Marines green and sleek design are iconic to Halo (despite being based off starship troopers, but that is another story).
If I were to rank the Marines I would go like this.

1. Halo 2 (and Anniversary), Halo 3 marines.

Their design is sleek, futuristic, and just beautiful. The best part about their deisgn is the colour scheme. Halo 2 (and anniversary) and Halo 3 and a great colour scheme of green, witch matched Master Chief’s armor, the Warthogs, the Pelicans, everything in the UNSC had a unified green look. The green colour of these Marines define the UNSC’s design. I still have my Halo 3 Marine action figure, it looks so pretty…

2. Halo CE (and Anniversary) marines.
These Marines look great (click here to see the anniversary version), the design is a little bit bulky, but the Marines still look very humanoid (by that I mean they look like normal people in armor, rather than huge supersoldiers like Spartans). Seeing as these were the first Marines, they lead the iconic Marine look that defined Halo. Furthermore, the colour scheme is great! The brown armor over the grey under armor looks great.

3. Halo Wars marines

As sleek as they look, the face guard makes them look less Marine like (covered faces should only be for higher up soldiers like ODST or Spartans). I prefer Marienes to look more human, and have visible faces. However the rest of the armor and helmet looks great!

4. Halo Reach marines (army troopers).

My biggest issue with Halo Reach’s marines is that they are WAY too bulky. Although they were inspired by Halo 1 Marines, their armor just looks too bulky and cluttered. The colour scheme is also inconsitant switching from white and brown. Halo CE: Anniversary touched up Halo Reach’s Marines and made the colourscheme and design lot better. On the bright side the Halo Reach Marines have great helmets and retain the iconic Halo Marine look.

5. Halo 4 marines
There are many reasons why Halo 4’s marines look ugly, but lets look at the two main types of marines. We’ll start with these guys. They have a terrible colour scheme. Halo CE (and anniversary) had a decent colour scheme as it stuck mostly to brown. Halo 2 (and anniversary) and Halo 3 and a great colour scheme of green, witch matched Master Chief’s armor, the Warthogs, the Pelicans, everything in the UNSC had a unified green look. Halo 4’s marines have an ugly beige (beige is a terrible colour) colour scheme and the armor and under armor clash. The design of the armor is also bad as it looks like modern day kevlar. The Marines armor looks like they are soldiers from 2010, the Halo soldiers should look futuristic. The helmets have lost the iconic Halo marine look.

As for these marines, their face mask looks terrible. Marines shouldn’t wear face masks (helmets and face masks should be left for Spartans and ODSTs) a reason why I love Marines is because they arn’t “badass”, they are just your average human who enlisted and is fighting for humanity, it makes them so much more relatable. Their face masks look like a poorly designed skull over their face.

Although this is my personal opinion, I am pretty sure most people on the forums would view Halo 3 or Halo 2 as the best Marine designs and Halo 4 as the worst Marine designs.

I feel that Halo 5: Guardians should bring the marines back to their iconic sleek look. The iconic look of the Marines help define Halo. Whatever 343i does, make the marines, warthogs, master chief, pelicans, and all UNSC things share one colourscheme. Halo 2 and Halo 3 did this well.

PS. I know Halo Reach Marines are not actually Marines and are instead “Army Troopers”, pretty much the same thing okay! Don’t start a lore argument!

I love Halo 4’s Marines design, aside from the fact that a lot of them are wearing bulletproof vests when they SHOULD be covered in lightweight futuristic armor. That said, Halo 2 Anniversary and Wars’ Marines were my favorite because they actually look hyper-protected. I just wish Halo 2A’s Marines had the Halo 3 visors/eyecovers.

And I like Marines with their faces covered, makes them look more badass. And certain mission call for visors or masks.

I prefer the shape of the chest, helmet, and shoulders of halo 3 marines a lot, so I want to see more angular armor rather than round.

Well I respect your preference.

I think the mean badass look should be saved for ODST and Spartans,

Marines should look more prone to being blown too bits, trauma, and just more fleshy and human. More relatable is the word I’m looking for.

I hate the redesigns of halo 4 (and I mean all redesigns not just the marines). Any pre halo 4 designs would be better. As for those Reach marines, I believe many of them were actually UNSC army not navy as the marines would be under the navy. As for the halo 2-3 redesign vs halo 1 They could come up with some reason for having multiple types of uniforms. The hal owars marines had the similar design to halo 1 as well btw.

The Marines in every game were better than Halo 4. The addition of ballistic vests was just… so very, very strange. Given Infinity and the Spartan-IVs, it was like all of Humanity had leaped forward in the intervening years between Halo 3 and Halo 4, except the Marines, who looked to have gone backwards about 500 years.

There will probably be a new design for Halo 5.

lets hope so.

Yeah its weird.

I don’t see it as that big a deal. Hardly even noticed the redesign until it was pointed out to me.

Some people pay more attention to details and artistic things, I don’t mean that as an insult. Just different strokes for different folks.

My favorite is, and always has been, Halo 3’s Marines.

YES, we want Halo 2/3 marines back! (and also their likeable nature)

Halo 2/A and Halo 3’s marines look the best to me. I especially like the yellow eyewear that the Halo 3 marines had, because it kinda reminded me of those eyepieces the CE marines used to wear.

If you’ve seen FUD, apparently those goggles give marines a HUD to use. It’s funny, the HUD from those goggles should diminish the need for marines to aim down sights, and yet we’re still getting smart scope in H5.

Well you need to remember that the armor sets are all different for a reason.

The Halo Reach and CE, CEA are because its outer colony grade armor for hazardous planets and such. (And it seems like Halo had the same armor as these, it was just more updated since 4 years had passed.)

While the 2 and 3 are for Earth and for more of defensive countermeasures.

All of the armor is different for all of their own respective reasons. So it depends on where we are. Although it would be nice to be at earth at some point and see the classic green armor and then go to some far off planet or whatever and see the sleek grey and black.

However IMO my favorite armor was the Halo 4 armor.

I don’t mind Halo 4 Marines in general, I just don’t like the Bog standard Halo 4 Marine. I am fine with the green Marines on Infinity and the ones on Composer, its just the plain white ones we tend to see in cutscenes and the like that I think look terrible. The motorcycle helmets and lack of any visible plate armor really bugs me.

Its just the standard Marine that really needs to change from Halo 4.

Apart from the vests, I thought the Halo 4 Marines looked pretty cool. The thing that annoyed me though, was the fact that you mainly saw the “Heavy Infantry” in game while in the cutscenes it was always the white armoured guys. It’d be much better if the standard armour was seen throughout the majority of the game rather than just the cutscenes.

On another note, I didn’t really like the look of the Spartan IVs seen in Campaign either. The Recruit armour looked too much like ODST armour, and the colour scheme didn’t help either.

Also, fun fact, the Halo 2 Anniversary marine design is actually based on the Halo Wars marines, which I thought was pretty cool.

All Marine armour looks good in my opinion. However the armour and camo pattern they have in Halo 2/3 is my favourite and it would be nice to see this return in Halo 5.

I still maintain that if any soldier, in any fictional universe, calls themself a ‘Marine,’ they should automatically be wearing camo.

So definitely H2A and Halo 3.

Halo 3 marines… Something more like johnson

The 2A and Wars marines look incredibly awesome IMO. If any design had to be picked for Halo 5G I’d want those to return. But honestly, anything would be better than the Halo 4 marines.

Halo CE marines are based off the colonial marines from Aliens, so I’ll go with that
