343, THIS is How You Make A Map Pack

Put interactions with the map itself, add a bonus to the 3 staple maps given, please take notes from these more expierienced devs.

Right, make the game even more like CoD…

If they’re going to take COD’s ideas, at least take the good ones.

> Right, make the game even more like CoD…

No, he’s trying to make a point and just using CoD as an example. Halo 2 had a bunch of excellent interactive maps, like Terminal with its train and Containment with the giant openable gates and explosives littered around the map. Those elements made the maps great, and it would be wise to follow that example in the future.

From what I can tell, these maps aren’t even that good. Encore looks absolutely terrible for gameplay and from what I can tell 343 have a lot more to say about strategy needed on their maps than Treyarch do about theirs. CoD maps have never been well designed after MW2 (which still didn’t even have that many great maps anyway). And also, map interactions can still be done badly, like they have here. A map that has magma that flows through it randomly and can kill you in the middle of a map? side bars that you can easily fall off of? These all sound like bad design ideas.

I completely agree with this.

What I find funny about this is that there were a bunch of CoD maps made by the very same company that made the Halo 4 maps.

The interactive stuff would be cool and all but it would most likely just create more frame rate issues in Halo 4.

I remember Halo 3 had interactivity with its levels like Orbital and High ground with it’s operable doors. Then all of that went away in Reach.

cod did lava before halo. -_-

They also worked on Halo 2 Blastacular, CoD:WaW, CoD:Blops 2 and also Halo Reach. WaW and Halo 2 Blastacular had some fantastic maps, hence why I said once it reached MW2 and I also forgot to note that they worked on the two new Halo 2 maps that came with H2V. So Certain Affinity have made some pretty good maps.

Bungie did environmental hazards in Halo first.

Does Halo 2’s Terminal ring a bell?

Those graphics are so bad lol. The fire looks so bad. Just watching this video you can tell the hit detection’s are horrible. Glad i traded mine in.

Those ideas were in past Halo games and worked greatly. A train in the middle of the map that drives by randomly and can kill you? Or, bars that you can easily fall off of? Plus, he’s not saying to use those exact ideas, but just to generally go back to the interactive aspects of maps that we all knew and loved in past Halo games.

That’s not the point of this thread, keeping the CoD bashing out of here would be nice.

There’s a difference between large pools of larva that randomly flows through the map during battle and a train that only runs through the dead centre of the map down thin train tracks at certain time intervals.

Who said that the large pools of lava come randomly? Odds are that they have a scripted timing that can be learned and avoided, just like the train.

Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realise you were an expert in video game marketing.

Thank you Hotrod.

Oh how I miss the Guardians!

or the swinging doors on Turf!

Interactive things are nice. But could care less. Doesn’t have a good feel to me in core gameplay. If we had options to forge them then sure. But for halo i would much rather prefer a beautiful landscape in which to walk in then having a very limited event that effects us.
