343 - Read if you want H5's Rank System to work

This will be short and sweet.
343 - If you want H5’s rank system to have any shot at motivating/retaining large online populations, like H2/H3’s 1-50 systems did . . . PLAYERS MUST BE ABLE TO SEE/KNOW/UNDERSTAND WHAT THEIR RANKS MEAN!

Example:

  • XxNoTatryHARDxX just finished placement game #10. - He sees he’s been placed in Gold Level 1. - XxNoTatryHARDxX: “Gold?! Wait…WTF does that mean? Is Gold good?”. - Going against the nature of his very own gamertag, he actually tries pretty -Yoinking!- hard to figure out whether Gold Level 1 is a great, good, avg, ok, or lousy rank. - He searches every in-game menu. - Guess what? He finds __absolutely NOTHING!__I shouldn’t have to say another word. Pull your heads out of your -Yoinks!- and get a ranking chart/diagram/legend/something IN THE GAME!

That is, of course, assuming you want your rank system to be worth a damn.
If not, then just leave them as is…because you’re mission to offer another failure of a rank system is right on track.

Agree 100%!!! People need to be able to understand what their rank means because otherwise whats the point? Its just some random nonsense. I think rank should be more prominently displayed as well.

Well, they did have this article a few weeks ago.

That’s absoluetly correct. To not have some sort of legend explaining the rank-class hierchy is either self-sabotage or just plain incompetence. Not just becasue it’s common sense, but also because Bungie made the same damn mistake with Halo Reach Arena ranks 5 years ago…those ranks failed…hard.

If you read 343’s article you would know lol. Ranks go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Onyx, Champion. Do your reading before flaming

343 has never made any effort to establish a primary medium through which they addressed their customer/fanbase. They use Twitter this day, Waypoint next day, IGN another, NeoGAF here and there… So, it’s safe to assume that article did very little. The avg player does not have any clue this website even exists.

I know a place where 343 can post important information and know without question that almost all players will see that info… In the game.

Yes, and this website is not part of the game. Do your thinking before labeling.

I’ve read the article, but it still does not provide explanation into the reasoning behind the ranking algorithm. Yes, wins increase but what is difference between gold and silver? Why am I in gold and not diamond after my placement matches? Etc. I think they did a decent job of explaining but could expand more.

This is also true. I don’t think that info has to necessarily be put in the game, though I think it definitely wouldn’t hurt.

Edit: The point I’m making is that most players will NOT visit this website or ever see the article you and I have read. The article explains the ranks fairly well. That’s not the problem. The problem is the majority of players aren’t seeing the content in that article, because they don’t assume they have to do research to understand a fundamental element of the game they’re playing. They assume imperative info is placed in-game…because it’s imperative info, ya know?

It would be helpful even on the waypoint site. I have my rank for slayer but I have no idea what it meant until I googled it (and waypoint was not the first hit on the search.).
Definitely needs somewhere to explain the ranking better. Maybe on the question mark telling you want the ranking is.

Although the OP’s attitude doesnt help, i do agree with his core meaning of the post.

there should be leaderboards, populations of each division etc in the actual game.

even something as basic as copying FIFA’s table for ‘seasons’ mode… Just so we know how many people are in each division… How hard could that be to implement?

To be fair, this is the official Halo website. I would consider this the primary medium even though I agree with you they like to change where they show information each day. I do know also that when you start up H5 the message of the day says something along the lines of checking out this website for more information on Reqs and stuff.

Well, they did put it on the website, but you’re right, they should have something in-game to let them know what it is. Maybe be another tab in your service record in-game.

True, but to assume that translates to a majority of players actually visiting the site would be… well, it’d just be ignorant, because they won’t. The 1-50 rank systems in H2/H3 worked so well because each rank’s value was obvious

Right. They did put it on the website, and that’s obviously a good thing. It’s just not the main thing, or main place where the info needs to be. Sure, maybe another tab.

Personally, I suggest:

  • Designing easy to see/read rank chart & permanently place it within the main Arena screen.
  • At bottom of small chart say, “Press ___ for more”.
  • Press ___ pops up a window containing more details & a clearer/larger view of rank chart.
  • At bottom of pop-up window, state “For even more on H5 ranking, visit www.halowaypointrankexplain.com”.
  • Lastly, offer ability to open link directly from that window using the XOne Edge browser.
This stuff is elementary; basic communication. Simple…but without it being accessible from within the game, the rank system will fail. If the meaning of each/all ranks is not able to be known very easily from within the game, the majority of players will never understand the ranks and therefore they will never care about them.
