343, Please help resolve Upstream Bandwidth "WARNING"

My gamer tag is Techno Wizard. My Download Speed is 39 MB/S, My ping is 30 MS, and my Upload Speed is 4 MB/s. I have a great connection and I use Brighthouse Road Runner Lightning as my ISP. I have a Motorola Surfboard and I have been using it for months with no problem. Just recently went I went to check my network status, it said, “Upstream Bandwidth Warning” in red. I called my internet provider and they ran a diagnostic and checked my system. It was running great with no problem. Would someone from 343 help me resolve this matter and reset my bandwidth warning back to Green. I have been playing Reach for months and have not had this problem to recently. I have almost reached the rank of Eclipse and I have noticed the online play has been up and down lately. I surfed the web and found that many other gamers have had this problem, yet their internet is fine. Please, someone help me with this matter.

Mine has always been green as well, and now it’s like a yellow or whatever is the second best. I’ve never had any issues, but I have noticed Reach being a lot laggier and stuff lately.

Yeah, yesterday it took like 6-7 shots with the DMR to drop someone. Today It only took 3-4 and a single grenade seemed to do way too much damage. The game runs smooth, but it seems the mechanics change from day to day. Hopefully I get this bandwidth warning thing resolved, it’s never been a problem until this last week.

Dude it has nothing to do with how many shots it takes to kill someone with a DMR, The two are in no way linked. In fact upstream bandwith is actually not even strongly related to latency or lag as you may know it, It is actually the speed in which your internet connection can upload information to the cloud.

In short even if there is a problem or error message saying you have poor upstream bandwidth there is very very little that you can do about it, It has no effect on gameplay unless you have latency issues which you can google and optimise to get a better ping and less latency for yourself.

In short and not complicated,

Your upstream bandwith is not causing the DMR to function any differently that is proberly latency please google how to fix it and try resetting your network first.

I’ll try that. But I have been a gamer for thirty years and I have an engineering degree. Upstream bandwidth plays a large role in what info is being sent and how fast when you shoot. My ping is excellent compared to the national average, I just want someone to fix this. I thank you for your input. The comment about how many shots it took with the DMR was referring to the gameplay mechanics that seem to change from day to day. Blazing Star, you seem like a cool dude and I appreciate any input. If you look up this problem, many other gamers are experiencing this. If there isnt a problem, then the warning should not be there. I’ve heard of people not being picked as host because of this issue. I have been in contact with Microsoft and I am just wanting someone to help me. Lord knows I Love Halo, but having that message saying it could affect gameplay or matchmaking, really bothers me.

i have this warning every since i got reach dont know what is wrong

I’m a Game Developer myself and I have written networking code for my own applications I have a pretty good insight into the code and tecnology behind modern games, Latency is one of the biggest problems today when creating mutiplayer systems for network engineers.

I have a couple of extra bits of advice to try:

Follow these instructions
Advice A
Connect via wired internet if you have not already

Advice B
Use the following websites to test your settings and post the results and I may be able to give more advice:

Advice C

  1. Turn on your xbox
  2. Go to the system settings tab
  3. Go to the network settings panel
  4. Go to configure network settings
  5. Go to advanced settings
  6. Click “Reset my network to factory default”

Good Luck

Has anyone ever figured this out? I have Brighthouse Lightning as well just like the OP. 40mb down 5mb up. Typical ping around 15ms.

I verify this on the websites sourced in this thread which I have done many times in the past.

I have a wired connection to the Motorola Surfboard modem connected with Cat6 cable.

Some days it seems fine. Others it seems like my connection is the source of problems in game. For example, everybody has green bars and I am red. Other games seem fine for me yet others complain.

My Upstream Bandwith also fluctuates between yellow or red. It used to be green in the past.

What is frustrating is my connection speed has not noticeably enhanced gameplay for the additional cost to me. If anything, at times it feels worse than when I had speeds of 10 down 2 up. That is counter intuitive.

I am definitely getting the advertised speeds, even over wifi. What is up with Halo Reach or the net code or what…? This is where my knowledge dissipates and speculation begins for me…

Lastly, my NAT is open by default and I do use a static ip for the 360 and have the proper ports forwarded as well.

Advice or conversation on this topic would be most welcomed. There isn’t much that can be done at the level of my ISP at this point. It seems to just be this game.

I so very much ope Halo 4 doesn’t suffer from the same phenomenon.

Sorry to revive such an old thread but this has been happening for so long and this is the closest and most recent post on this exact topic I cold find and I love these forums the most for all things Halo!

Please keep this alive until we can mark it resolved… or at least “understood,” LOL.

Watch out for them bumps. You can get nailed as a spam.

Let me give you a little piece of Advice. Brighthouse Roadrunner sucks. End of story, we can all go home.

> Dude it has nothing to do with how many shots it takes to kill someone with a DMR, The two are in no way linked. In fact upstream bandwith is actually not even strongly related to latency or lag as you may know it, It is actually the speed in which your internet connection can upload information to the cloud.

Actually, you are the complete opposite of being correct, which would be that you’re wrong. Download speed determines how fast you are able to download information from WAN (Internet) to your console/computer/device/etc.

Upload speed determines how fast your are able to send OUT data from your box to the host or destination IP. Most people, believe it or not, get a Warning or Moderate (yellow) message for it.

The upload speed being in Warning won’t affect Normal Matchmaking in P2P conflicts. Basically fighting against other players things will be fine. What makes it noticeable is FireFight, because data is more abundant and alot more is going on.

Think of it this way: In Normal Matchmaking, the only data that needs sent/received is Player Data (movement, location), weapons, projectiles, etc. Now, in Firefight, you not only have that stuff that needs uploaded, but enemy AI data, their location, projectiles, and decision-making. That’s ALOT of stuff that needs to go out at once.

So even being on Warning doesn’t really matter for Normal Matchmaking, as long as your Upload speed is more than 512kbps I believe. Download speed should be about the same or 756kpbs or higher for decent downloading of said data. You shouldn’t have issues with lag unless either Download or Upload drops below these figures or the Host IS having these issues.

Also, Ping, will create a delay in game as far as how fast information is updating because if there are overseas people hosting a game (far too often) and American players are playing, the further away the host is, the longer (and worse) the response time is.

Hope that explains it better.

Please do not bump the thread.

listen im not being rude or anything but UPSTREAM BANDWIDTH has NO LINK whatsoever to gameplay. Upstream bandwidth relates to your upload speeds not ping… Now dont try and use you engineering degree nonsense on me because ive studied everything there is to know about computers, gaming and internet… im what people call an Internet geek. your DMR has no relation to upstream bandwidth… your DMR DOES however have relation to your PING. Try researching how to decrease your ping and make it less laggy (for want of a better word).
My upstream bandwidth has always been on warning and i notice no issues whatsoever… my grav hammer still has splash damage, still get ridiculous sword lunges, still hit back against 6/7 people with no shields and the bomb… and ive always had warning bandwidth. people are helping you (or atleast trying to) and all you’re doing is saying that everyone is wrong… if you want help, listen to us or go elsewhere. Dont just sit there acting like you know everything when clearly you dont. Someones throwing help at you, use it… dont just tell them “oh no thanks for help but you’re wrong”
