343 need to learn from The Coalition. (Gears Dev)

The coalition is the new developer behind the Gears of War series just like 343 was the new developer behind the Halo series. The coalition recently spoke about the direction in which they want to take the franchise in:

From Article - On the whole, the team is looking at Gears of War Judgement a lot, said Cleven, to try and understand what players didn’t like about the game, and to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes again. At the same time, they will also be considering the things players did like about the Gears games, all of them, and try to hit those same notes with the new title.

How does this tie in to Halo you ask?

They are trying to make a True Gears of War game, unlike 343. Halo 5 doesn’t even feel like a Halo game at all IMO. Maybe 343 should try to make a true Halo game next time. Gears of war judgment is a Halo 4 equivalent in terms of changes in gameplay. They dumbed down the mechanics and added verticality to map design. It wasn’t a gears game, just like Halo 5 isn’t a halo game. Judgment was the lowest selling Game in the series and had the lowest Multiplayer populations and Halo 5 has similar results.

Call me crazy, but maybe this is what happens when you stray away from the original gameplay formula. People play Halo for Halo and people play Gears of war for Gears of war.

Of course this is just drawing parralls between two different franchises that have had similar scenarios. Halo 5 may feel like a halo game to you but for many that’s not the case.

What makes you feel like it is not a Halo game anymore? Its still a skilled game where there is no spray-an-pray, but instead accurate shooting. There is indeed new game mechanics like it or not we can’t do -Yoink- about it for now. Game is balanced, map… well forget about the maps… but it does feel Halo to me

Well they did just what the coalition is doing, they looked at halo 4 and scrapped all of what people disliked (weapon pods, no de-scoping, loadouts etc.) and they focused on arena gameplay (map and power up/weapon control). Hey they kept abilities but atleast everyone has them and for the most part they all have there perks as well as disadvantages (which is a good thing). Thats fine that you didnt like halo 5 necessarily but it doesnt mean 343 didnt evaluate their approach to things after halo 4. Heck the biggest complaint in halo 4 was it was too casual, so the focused on competitive play, dont get me wrong they put too much focus on it (lack of gametypes) but its very obvious that they look at what is wrong and attempt to fix it.

What makes a halo game a halo game is different for every person, what that means to you i have know idea but halo in my eyes is pure arena combat which they nailed, now I just want that social side to shine which I expect to see either in the coming updates or in halo 6 (hopefully we will get a nice balance of casual and competitive play)

So they said a thing. Huh. That’s real nice. 343 has also said things. But you don’t care about that, now do you?

I think 343 should look at what Halo CE, 2, 3, Reach, 4 and 5 all did right and wrong. Then combine all of the right things together and ask for community feedback while they’re making the game.

Halo 5 not being a Halo game is only your opinion. It’s much better in comparison to GoW Judgment was for GoW franchise.

Also if Halo 5 was released with forge and all the game types everyone is asking for no one would be hardly complaining. The problem with Halo 5 isn’t mechanics, gameplay, balance, it’s content.

That’s true, 343 are trying and I think they’re doing good. The Forge in Halo 5 is fantastic, I don’t think anyone can argue, yet people still will because they’ll find one thing that they don’t like about it.

This is exactly what I’m thinking, many people have dropped the game saying it’s too stale, that it doesn’t have enough content. I’ve seen almost no people saying that they stopped playing Halo 5 because of the mechanics, people have complained about them but not too many have quit because of them.

To me, it doesn’t feel like a Halo game because of the emphasis on zany ways to zip around the maps. We have sprinting and clamber creating interruptions in gunplay and reducing the emphasis on map control. We have thrusters, ground-pound, and Spartan charge which are all just silly and once again, pull emphasis away from gunplay.

I stopped playing halo 5 because of the mechanics.

The gamelay doesn’t feel like Halo to me. Map design plays a big part of it along with the Spartan abilities. Yes it’s competitive and it has fair starts but those aren’t the only things that make Halo Halo. Gameplay balance should be a given for any game. That has nothing to do with Halo being a Halo game or not.

Your logic:

So if 343 added a pick 10 Create a class system in Halo 5 you’d be okay with it because it’s ‘balanced’.

Ugh the ol’ “it doesn’t feel like Halo” BS. What would make it feel like Halo? Walking around the map at a snails pace? You purists are doing more harm than good trying to revert Halo back to 2002.

Gnasher spray inconsistent? Yup, it’s still a Gears game.

That’s perfectly fine with me, it’s your preference. If you think Halo 5 doesn’t feel like Halo I’d agree with you, although I think Halo 5 is an awesome game.

That’s quite a leap, buddy.

I stopped playing Halo 5 because of this too. It was a combination. It’s lack of content and community features along with it not playing like a classic Halo game threw me off. That’s not to say Halo 5 is bad. I like the mechanics and abilities, but they don’t feel like Halo.

I mean, without the “purists trying to revert Halo back to 2002(?)”, you would have had more Halo 4, but that’s cool.

If the pacing of classic Halo games don’t appeal to you, then maybe Halo just isn’t the franchise for you.

I greatly prefer the classic Halo pacing. But I can appreciate a sped up game too. That’s why I went and bought BO3. It does the quick, zany movement mechanics better than Halo 5.

Right now though, we don’t have any new options for games with a classic Halo pace. That’s why we speak out so much about turning this series around and getting it back on track. Those who like sped up movement mechanics have plenty of options. We don’t have that luxury.

That’s false since we have Halo 5.
