Same thing happened in Halo 5.
Fingers crossed that Forge stabilises the situation and then 343 pulls something out of their -yoink- for Season 3.
The wider spread of ranks definitely requires an adjustment to the way you play. It will suit some styles better than others.
Because games that have massive player retention do these things, and 343 only cares about the “broader audience”. Kind of unfortunate that less than 1% of that 20 million that downloaded infinite still play the game.
343 doesn’t understand that this “broader audience” they so desperately crave doesn’t exist. Let’s analyze.
Most gamers in general have played or seen Halo at some point in their life. Whether they invested hundreds of hours with the franchise on Xbox Live, or played it a couple of times at a friend’s house, most gamers who play shooters have some experience with Halo. They know what a Halo game is supposed to look and feel like. Something comparable to Halo 3 or Halo Reach, probably. Nostalgia sells these days. Social features are primarily brought up these days. The “broader audience” 343 claims to be after is the COD/Apex/Fortnite crowd, I assume. But why would they have any reason to abandon those games in favor of something that resembles a strange fusion of those games and Halo? In most cases, they’ll probably play a few games, go “Meh, I like Apex better,” and leave.
I just played 2 ranked matches of 5 and the teams were like extremely balanced man. Won the first game 50 to 48 where both teams had 3 onyx players and one diamond, next game lose 49 to 50 where both teams had 3 daimonds and 1 onyx.
Those matches felt much better than most of the matches I’ve had in infinite. There’s no way infinite has less players than 5 already. It didn’t take long to find the matches either. Under a minute. Probably even under 30 seconds.

No. I’m sure they’re regulars of h5. I definitely didn’t start playing 5 again as practice for infinite. I’m not interested in coming back to that. It just shocked me how well the matches were balanced in my games, for a game that people probably think isn’t played anymore. There’s probably some playlists harder to find matches in, but its always kept the highest populated playlists throughout each season…and…its always been in each each halo for that matter…except infinite.
My bad. Didn’t see the 5.
I imagine H5 had probably got a skewed population towards the high end which may help with matching around those levels.
