343, its time to bring in the Lore Masters.

In the development of Halo 5, 343 brought in a pro team to help develop and design the multiplayer experience. Obviously, having their feedback and playtesting opinions benefited multiplayer greatly!

343 is also bringing in Cartographers from the community to build the BTB maps coming later this year. From what weve seen, these maps look amazing.

So, with the release and criticism of Halo 5’s story, I have a solution. Instead of bring in a writer to talk to one guy about the Halo universe for a few hours, and then make the story to a game, bring in Lore Masters from the community to help! We’ve been reading about the universe since its inception, discussed theories, and love the universe.

Instead of blindly releasing a story that divides the community, and feels muddy to even the most dedicated lore fans, have the community help make these stories! We know the backstories and what character arcs would be awesome to explore (Chief is the Didact? Whaaaa???). Of course writers will always be necessary, but we can definitely do a better job of presenting the RIGHT stories from the RIGHT perspectives.

So please, include the community in the heart and soul of this universe. You wouldnt even have to pay us. We do this for fun already!

Thanks for marking the spoiler NOT :frowning:

Is that a spoiler? I have not beaten the campaign and I swear if that is…

Or was that a “community” idea.

There arent any spoilers in OP. I also agree with this.

I thougt this is an spoiler “We know the backstories and what character arcs would be awesome to explore (Chief is the Didact? Whaaaa???).”, but maybe i didnt heard about it yet or misundestood you, im sorry.

No, it was an example of something that could be explored and fleshed out better if the Lore Masters got to contribute to it.

OP, I think that this is a fantastic idea! I got into Halo for its story and lore, and while I enjoy the gameplay, it is the story that drives my interest. I have finished Halo 5’s campaign, and am still processing how I feel about it, but I feel confident enough to say that it was not as good as I was expecting/hoping for.

A fun fact about it would be that such a thing would mirror Halo’s gameplay trifecta of Shoot/Melee/Grenade. You’d have the Pro/Cartographer/Lore Master trifecta influencing all areas of Gameplay, Map/Level/Environment Design and Story, and it is my opinion that this last one needs to be spruced up a bit.

It would be really nice if in future media they could have a big list of all of their canon with someone who is constantly updating it and monitoring who can keep an eye on new upcoming content and do a ‘Canon Check’ to make sure that new stuff is consistent.

So what defines a “lore master” and who gets to decide who is and isn’t a lore master? It’s not like pro team, you’re either a professional player or you aren’t

THANK YOU. By being a big fan of the lore myself, I really hate how the story was told here, also especially how this game was marketed. The marketing had NOTHING to do with the story. So now am I just supposed to believe that these ads are canon after having nothing to do with the story???

I’ve read all the books, played all the games, and know the back story really well. I loved the campaign in Guardians, but I could already list some improvements that I personally think could have made the campaign a bit more interesting to some Halo fans who aren’t as invested to the lore.

Campaign Improvements

Add real unique bosses. I believe Mission 1 should have ended with a small boss battle with Jul 'Mdama. It could have been similar to a boss in Warzone…but a little more unique than just being a bullet sponge. Something where it requires you to issue commands to your team to distract him while you try to stun him by either using ground pound or a spartan charge in order to bring down his shields.

Introducing Osiris and Blue Team

As far as story goes, Halo lore is followed by hardcore fans, but the majority who buy Halo 5 are a little lost as to who Osiris or even Blue Team are. As a matter of fact, most consumers haven’t read Escalation or any Halo novel (or even watched Nightfall). The characters need some cutscene time during the game (not only in the Halo channel)…nothing too long like MGS4, but just enough to explain their roots and how they became Spartans in the first place. I think Spartan Ops did well with the cutscene length.

I could list many more, but those are just a couple ideas.

343 Industries is the “Lore Masters”, H5G is scrutinized due to middle saga second act under developed exposition. But it isn’t that bad since it does move the story forward into a challenging and desperate place.

agreed

Halo 5 ignored the logical progression of the story set up by the Forerunner Saga and Halo 4 and instead went with the evil Cortana and army of death machines plot.

I think this is an idea that would be good if taken into extreme caution.

Frankie is in possession of the “Halo story bible” originally created in the early days of Halo by Bungie, it is in a safe under lock and key. They have the golden codex of Halo lore already.

No. I am sick and tired of this damn theory. Bring in community members if you want but you stay away from that stupid idea.

Oh and they have the Halo Bible so their good

Halo 5 had a really mixed story. On one hand I’ve liked pretty much every character introduced, I love the atmosphere of the missions with Merdian’s missions being real favorites, and the interpretation of the Mantle introduced in this game is fascinating. At the same time, what happened with Cortana and how her fate was essentially explained in a rushed, hand-waving fashion was really poor. Blue Team also got the shaft and that wasn’t fun. Still, I don’t know if getting a bunch of book nerds to comment on the story would work the same way pro-gamers help the multiplayer. Hell, the kind of things I find interesting may be just as divisive as what actually happens in the game.

That was the plan all along since H1-3 was about defeating the ultimate organic threat the Flood so it was kind of obvious at the start of H4 that AI was going to be the new nemesis. I honestly thought that idea was going to happen all the way back at the H3 legendary ending from seeing the unknown Dyson sphere.

Aren’t “Lore Masters” already responsible for Halo 5’s new mechanics in MP? Wasn’t #immersion and feeling like a Spartan the reason for Sprint, ADS, Clamber and Thrust? Aren’t you short changing yourself a bit here?

But in any case, my problem with Halo lore has always been that I felt it’s a bit…convoluted.

Even the most minuscule details cobbled together by disgruntled writers ambling for a paycheck from Microsoft become massive story-altering elements when attempting to build a video game. I suppose I’m simply concerned that this process will lead to a - and forgive me if this sounds harsh - team full of fanfiction writers giving a major video game developer ideas. :stuck_out_tongue:

I do apologize if that concept annoys anyone. I’d be delighted to be proven wrong.

I almost want to say the universe has become so huge and complicated that a story that encompasses all the elements fans want would be unfocused and illogical. Then another part of me remembers that cutting the Lore Masters out of this process would give the professional writers free reign, and even that doesn’t work well. (Go home, Brian Reed.) It is in this paradox that a third option presents itself. Do the Disney. Nuke the EU and start from scratch, CE style. The amount of white noise that could clutter a narrative dies instantly with this option - but it will not go over well with fans.

Except the Flood hasn’t been defeated yet.
