"343 is Driving Away Their Fans."

I’m hearing these sentiments a lot around the forums, specifically in the complaint threads. The writers of these threads are painting out a grim future where thousands upon thousands of Halo fans give up on the franchise, and Halo becomes even less popular than it is now. This is a terrible, awful thing that should be avoided at all costs.

But what if it wasn’t?

What if going through a bit of a “cleansing” is exactly what the Halo community needs? Say the worst happens, and lots of fans leave the franchise for other games. Well, so what? Many games survive online with less population, and the communities behind those games are usually much closer knit, and have a better dialog with the developer. Sure, we might end up having less playlists to concentrate the lower population, and search times might occasionally be longer at non-peak hours. Worst case scenario is that interest in Halo drops throughout the gamer community, gets dropped by MLG, and Halo is no longer considered a huge franchise.

Thing is…

I don’t think this would be a bad thing.

Prior to all the recent Halo 4 “controversy”, Waypoint was and still is a wonderful community made up of intelligent and fun people. We’re all here because we love Halo…And none of what I mentioned above would change that. We, the hardest-of-the-core fans would still be here; Talking about the game with other Halo fanatics. In fact, I’m willing to bet that if the fanbase for Halo shrunk, we’d grow even closer. We’d have less conflict and more collaboration. We’d have a much more direct line to 343. We’d become a better community, in the end.

So I’m not fretting about Halo 4. Come hell or high water, most of us will remain Halo fans until the franchise is finally put to rest…And that’s what matters. Even if the community fractures in half, those of us who remain will still be here; Doing what we do, day in and day out.

Just thought I’d share that sentiment.

I’m a hardcore Halo fan, and this is my favorite thread in the forums

Sometimes it seems like its mostly 10-16 year old kids complaining and stating their opinions as facts. But I agree, it doesnt matter what they say.

Halo is not going to end up the way they think it will

Forgive me if the comment is too harsh, but I agree that the community could use a good culling. The best thing about the changes that 343 are making to the series is that they will drive away those players who are competitors first and Halo fans second, and hopefully we will be left with a new class of players that have a bit more maturity than the present batch.

I kind of want 343i to drive away whiners. So that way we don’t have to worry about them in the future.

It’s kay though. We have a tight community.

Most people would agree that the community has gotten worse from H2/H3-Reach.

I’d agree with that too. And games don’t need ‘cleansing’. Games need all the population they can get. You’re just trying to glorify the fact that Reach drove away thousands of loyal fans, and that H4 may potentially do the same thing.

Hint: This is not good.

That will not happen. I am pretty sure microsoft wont let it.

It won’t happen because there will always be Halo fans. I personally don’t think that Halo 4’s changes will drive away as many people as the current combatants would have you believe.

I think Reach drove away more people than you think.

I hated Reach.

I’m still here, because I still love Halo. Reach didn’t ruin Halo for me. Reach ruined Reach =). I think a lot of fans who were put off by Reach feel the same way.

This might actually be good. This way, Halo would favour the quality of the community over the quantity. Sadly, Microsoft is all about making money, and they might discontinue Halo if a Flood (to use an analogy from multiple religions) like this were to happen.

True…True.

It doesn’t matter what you think.
Halo 3 had 200-300k people in its prime.
Reach has less than 100k at the same time that Halo 3 had 200k-300k.

People left Reach. Not because of increased competition. CoD, and other games such as GoW existed before Reach. It failed because it lost/couldn’t keep its fans.

Sigh, Halo 3’s population counter accounted for all players within the last 24 hours. Reach accounts for the players on at the given moment.

EDIT: Here’s a link

“Reach ruined Reach” is a big cover statement of what ruined itself. I think you meant the Reach Multiplayer ruined Reach. I’m not fond of the Multiplayer, though, I like other Reach’s feature of firefight, campaign, and custom. Try not to leave out those things unless they are terrible too.

People need to realise that we are talking about minute fractions of the community here. Nothing is going to cause “thousands” of previously dedicated Halo fans to leave the franchise; and even if that were the case, that would hardly make a dent in the millions that remained.

You’re wrong to compare the two. Halo 3 had a very significant advantage over Reach in that it was the final chapter in a trilogy of games that spanned close to a decade of time and two separate console generations. Fans always depart at the conclusion of a series, and it’s unrealistic to expect that every one of them would have returned for a spin-off that was only announced two years after the end of the trilogy, especially when you consider that most of the people who played the original Halo when it was first released were likely in their mid to late twenties by the time Reach was released.

Apples and oranges, my friend.

Trying to glorify bad game changes, probably the cutest thing I’ve seen you post yet.

> We, the hardest-of-the-core fans would still be here; Talking about the game with other Halo fanatics.

And that, is probably the stupidest. Suggesting that fans should still be fans no matter what horrible changes are made.

Example: You LOVE Pepsi. Pepsi changes there ingredients and makes there soda taste like piss. You should still drink and cherish Pepsi because you used to like it.

LOGIC = FLAWLESS

For the record, I love halo, and reach drove me far away from halo. However, i have high hopes for halo 4. That doesn’t in the slightest change the fact that I’m worried about it and will discuss what i believe to be bad choices.

If anything, i consider you less of a true halo fan for blindly following it instead of having your own opinions.

Nope. Halo 3 was able to pull 200k at any given moment.
It pulled 300k on Bungie Day.
Reach struggled to get 100k on Bungie day, and that was when they were giving out steaks.
