I am sorry that the community has complained so much and argued over such trivial things that you feel forced to appeal to every crowd in the Halo community no matter how niche they are. I really wanted a skill based rank system but at the end of the day it’s not even remotely important to gameplay. The fact that you plan to shoe-horn it in shows that you care about the small percentage begging for it but it feels so forced and I’m slightly embarrassed that you would have to make such changes to rank structure post-launch. The same goes for the customs community and every other facet of the community that feels like we got passed over. I get it, it’s a thing but how important is it really? It’s a new game, we should only be expecting new things and not cling to all the old features of a game from 2004 or 2007.
We are getting a new Halo game, that alone should be enough to put a smile on all our faces. And it’s not like it’s not going to be “Halo” either, many reviews have proven that. We should be happy with what we are getting, because we are getting a lot. This whole drawn out situation with the ungrateful community here and on various other forums is just really embarrassing. I myself am completely guilty of these crimes and I just want to sincerely apologize to you, the developer, if you ever caught my name complaining.
I cannot wait to play your game as it ships in the box. Anything you decide to add in post-launch to appease sects of the community is greatly appreciated, but never feel like you owe us anything. This is your Halo game, and sometimes a developer knows better than a fan what is good for them in the long run.
I wonder if you’d be saying this if 343 didn’t end up doing what you wanted?
On a more serious note: I second everything you said in this post. While I haven’t been complaining nearly as much as most people who visit internet forums, I definitely started off with having almost no faith in 343 to make a good game. Right after E3, though, I realized that 343 gets it and we’ve got something special to look forward to. I honestly can’t wait to put Halo 4 in my xbox on the 6th and spend the whole day putting the business end of my BR to the heads of players worldwide.
I think a lot of people fail to realize that the Halo community is huge and that 343 can’t give everyone everything they want. I think a lot of people need to move on, leave halo 2 in the past, and play Halo 4. Its time we stop asking to go back to the way things were and instead ask “where can we go?”
> I wonder if you’d be saying this if 343 didn’t end up doing what you wanted?
Honestly, I probably would have continued to complain. But it took them actually trying to appease me to make me realize how selfish I was being in the first place. They can’t even put the skill rank in the game and they are still trying to give me what I want and that shows that they care, but it also shows me that I want too much.
We all want too much. I bet money that in 2 weeks nobody will be complaining at all. We will all be busy having a good time with a great game.
> I really wanted a skill based rank system but at the end of the day it’s not even remotely important to gameplay.
I completely disagree. You obviously have never been matched up against a full party with 3.0 kds each. The team your on? Well, the best person after you has a .5 kd.
Im sure Halo 4 will pull off what Halo Ce did when it came out 11 years ago. I see Halo 4 taking game of the year. I think they knew alot of changes had to be made. And as allways ppl dont like change. But once the 6th comes out and we all get in hours of game play we will then know what we really think of it

I’m talking about the number and bragging rights. The skill based matchmaking system is obviously needed and greatly welcomed. But you know as well as I do all the complaining is for a number to brag and talk trash to random players. And that has absolutely nothing to do with gameplay nor is it a true representation of a players skill. In-game actions speak louder than trivial numbers.

Yes, but bragging rights and Halo multiplayer are mixed. It was what Bungie wanted to do. Halo multiplayer is supposed to be about rubbing it in that one is a better player. Why else would someone play multiplayer?

Because this is not 2007 and Halo is not the standard by which other shooters are measured anymore. We all know that fact TOO well. All this fight for bragging rights hardly acknowledges the casual player or dare I say it the not-so-good player. Imagine if you really were not great at FPS’s, would you really want everyone to see and evaluate you based on a low score like some Spartan Scarlet Letter? Even if you already enjoyed playing the game regardless of your own performance in it wouldn’t you feel less psyched to play if you were constantly wearing an F on your head?

to play a good video game with other people and have fun?
People are indeed asking for way too much. It’s like some people are just so much focused on one thing, that they just overlook all the epicness that already is in the game.
I was already happy to hear the words Halo and 4 together…
Now if we could get apologies from the rest of the complainers and doubter, that would be a nice gesture given the havoc you guys/gals created with your one million threads and posts. ((((Shrugs))))

If I wasn’t good at a FPS shooter I wouldn’t play it. I also wouldn’t try to dumb it down so I could feel a warm, fuzzy feeling about being better at the sequel (and saying it’s because I’ve improved, when the truth is I have stayed the same, and have just had the standards lowered to make me feel better about myself). If one plays a game and says, “Oh, this game would be for me if (insert random crap that has no business being in said game) were in it,” he is playing the wrong game.
> If I wasn’t good at a FPS shooter I wouldn’t play it.
This is where I stopped reading because you need to seriously stop thinking of just yourself and realize that there are millions of other people who want to have an equal amount of fun playing the game.
I guess I should apologize on behalf of everyone as well.
I’m sorry 343i, I’m sorry that there are so many sheeple who are happy with whatever you do. I know blind adherence isn’t what any developer really wants but you’ll have to forgive them. They don’t understand the importance of criticism.
I, at least, accept you happily for all your failures and your many successes. May a bright future await you.

This is full of win…it’s like you read my thoughts and wrote them out for me…thank OP for a really good post… 2 more days

Did you really have to come in here and do this? I’m not talking blind acceptance, I’m talking understanding that 343 Industries is NOT Bungie. They should be allowed to speak their own voice within the parameters of Halo. Just because you aren’t getting the same features six games in a row (hello other major not-to-be-named franchise) does not make 343 the -Yoinking!- devil. You don’t like it? Don’t buy it. But don’t -Yoink- and moan and then end up shelving out your 60 bucks on Tuesday. Because if I am sheeple, that makes you a hypocrite.

If one wants to have fun playing a game not designed for a low skill level, HE IS PLAYING THE WRONG GAME. What right does he have to lower the standards of a game for HIS benefit? If I want to play Mass Effect on Insanity, but Insanity is too hard, I don’t ask Bioware to make Insanity easier, I just don’t play Insanity. One can play a competitive game casually, but he cannot play a casual game competitively.

Halo has been designed for skill levels of all types since 2001. If you really don’t see that you have problems with perception. Halo was born as easy mode for FPS’s. Dumbed down controls and aim assist. Yeah, strictly competitive over here.
