343, hear me out, we need a writer change.

Spoilers! You’ve been warned!

Okay, I would like to start this by saying that I don’t think Brian Reed is a bad writer, he is just a bad Halo writer. Lets all be honest here, Escalation was not one of the good Halo books, and Halo 5 is not a terrible story, but it did not meet many Halo fans expectations. Now the idea for the story for Halo 5 was good, but it was poorly executed. The narrative of Halo 5 was done very poorly, and a lot of moments in the campaign were too rushed and just really disappointed me. "Halo 5’s first act was essentially clean up crew." -LateNightGaming - Halo News & Entertainment. In the first act of Halo 5, everything in Spartan Ops became irrelevant. Jul 'Mdama was killed off instantly, Palmer’s dislike for Dr. Halsey vanished, and THIS WAS VERY BAD. The development of characters is this game was barely there. Lasky, Palmer, Dr. Halsey, Arbiter, Chief, Locke, Blue Team, Fireteam Osiris, Cortana had little, if not, no character development in the story, which was really disappointing because I wanted to see all of the characters from Halo 4 like Palmer, Lasky, Halsey, and Jul play a big role in Halo 5. I liked how Cortana was introduced back into Halo 5 with the twist that she was going to be the “bad guy” but like I said, it felt like it was rushed and it could’ve been done better. Blue Team, who everybody was excited to see finally be put in a Halo game, didn’t really contribute to the game, and didn’t nearly get as much praise and attention as Fireteam Osiris did in Halo 5. I wanted an awesome cutscene showing off Fred’s ability with a combat knife, Kelly’s crazy speed, Linda’s skill with a sniper, and Chief being a freaking killing machine. Halo 4’s story was excellent and I think if you bring Chris Schlerf back. the next Halo game could be THE Halo game, because you have made a a great multiplayer and now all you have to do is get a great campaign and a great multiplayer in the same game and $$$.

P.S.- Just saying, pair Eric Nylund and Chris Schlerf and amazing things could happen. Think about it.

Also nothing from Hunt the Truth carried over into Halo 5, and the marketing was very misleading.

The campaign is why I was so let down by Halo 5. The campaign should be half the game. All positive reviews just go for multiplayer.

I thought this myself, I don’t particularly care about the story - I just play for the multiplayer mostly - but man was that whole campaign misleading and a complete misrepresentation of the game’s story itself. I was literally confused at the end cause I felt like I had missed something.

Agree, that was one of the worst science fiction stories I have ever seen

I recently saw an ad on Halo 5’s war zone and it was full of praise by reviewers, but the reviews were only for the multiplayer…

I think part of it was that they never did a Season 2 of Spartan Ops, and another part was that there were too many characters to actually have any good character moments. I will argue, though, that the character moments between members of Blue Team and members of Osiris, and Cortana were all during gameplay as they talked back and forth to each other.

Another bug I had was the lack of any mention of the Janus key, that Halsey got form the Librarian. Whelp, there’s always Halo 6, yeah?

seriously after Halo 5 I’d say Brian Reed needs to go. I’d love to see some of the other writers team up for Halo 6.

Think about it Fire Team Crimson, Fire Team Osiris, Blue Team, three full out Campaigns to make up for the MCC and Halo 5.

Your entire post was well said. I did enjoy the campaign but felt there was so much more potential here. Perhaps there were just far too many characters for one game to do justice? Dump Vale and Tanaka for Palmer and Thorne. At least they are better established and don’t require the background reading as to why they are there.

It’s an action-driven video game campaign mode, not a Russian novel. The story was fine and it was well-told. “Didn’t meet many Halo fans’ expectations?” It really chaps my -Yoink- when people make sweeping generalizations about what other people think based off a half dozen “crank” forum threads written by people with a creative writing associate’s degree from some third-rate community college.

I don’t know how many Halo campaigns you’ve played through, but they’re all a little vague, a little opaque, and usually much more poorly written. I can’t even begin to imagine how scathing would be your review of CE’s campaign. Sorry to take up so much of your time. Now you can get back to Downton Abbey or whatever it is you’re into.

It is pretty insane that a community can call for a specific person to be sacked. In all reality unless anyone on this forums has worked as a professional writer you are way out of line. If you don’t like the story that is fine, complain about it, relay suggestions, and by all means think that you could do better, but that is where it should stop.

Yea I want to replay it on legendary but I didn’t really like it all that much. The campaign took a back seat cause it felt like they put it together last minute. They could of gave us more blue team missions idk why they thought it was a good idea to only give us three. For halo 6 I hope they take their time we have H5 for our mp needs so maybe 4-5yrs to work on getting all the story in. Right now replaying will only be for gathering intell, it’s crazy how so many ppl wanted h5 to be open world with side missions before we even knew about H5 but I guess out feedback only mattered for mp. I’m just imagining all the extra side ops we could of been doing the replayabilty would of been insane…

This especially. My god what a trainwreck it was. It’s going to be a very long time before I get over it.

Hey, we’re not saying the guy should be driven out of writing entirely and made homeless on the streets. He should just never write for Halo. Again. Ever.

The marketing was great, one of the best in the Halo series, but it just turned out to be just so, so thematically wrong. Just kind of blue balled me there.
Though, everything in HtT still happened and is canon to be built off in the future. So there is that, even if it didn’t play into 5.

@OP: You can’t call out someone directly, it’s against the rules. At least I still think that’s in effect, just warning you to change the title so this doesn’t get locked.

Here is my take on it all.
Being 22, now 22 and half coming when December is here, I grew up with Halo. As a grew up I learn what “story” meant and what “content(s)” meant. To be fair a lot of game do not have contents like a player wants, but it does have story. Halo 1-3, had enough information to get by, and if one needed more information they either picked up a book or looked it up. But the game itself had this story that was amazing and you wanted to learn more, about halo, about the forerunners, and about Master Chief and the Spartans, (and how Johnson got his butt off Halo). So Halo1-3 had enough information, you didn’t need to know every detail, it would have been pointless, could you imagine how long halo 1 would have been to fill the player on what is happening? Most games don’t have a huge story, in fact I invite anyone to give me one game that has a huge story, (note they can’t be rpg, meaning the player can’t decide the outcome.)
Halo 4-5 both had great stories, but something was missing. Halo 5 trailers vs the game were totally different. Now I know that trailers are trailers. But there was no battle between Chief and Locke, (a few punches is just a school yard brawl). But where was the mass destruction, the guardians were almost pointless, and so on. So the Said person that needs to go, needs to go.
(sorry for the bad grammar because Im sure there is some.)
(edited, I should also say this… I can write about each game easily, but that what take a awhile.)

i posted about this eariler before and agree completely but I was reported.
