343 had it right with MCC. What happened?

I know it took a while to get MCC to its current state but “right now” MCC is great

Customization
Progression
Game modes
Server location selection
Input options
Crossplay options

What happened. 343 could have used all the above items as an example when developing infinite.

Why did 343 took steps back instead of forward??

not so much customization, given that those were already in the games ported over along with the base games. same with the gamemodes.
but progression? per match xp based on skill AND the objective?
actual options for players to have fun? choose what they want to do?
yeah… what in tarnation happened for them to just not implement those in the 6 years it took to make the game

from someone who hyped mcc when it released on PC, its was straight dog doo doo when it dropped, a lot worse then Halo Infinites launch.

That doesnt even mention the fact that they had the ability to make it better because they had just released MCC like 4 years earlier on Console (which also had a crap release) and had the outline to actually make the game great…

as someone who was also there for MCC’s PC launch… compared to infinite? at least it had content. buggy? yeah. but not dissapointing. Reach was a good time, all be it was grindy. but i digress. overall, mcc pc had a waaay better launch than infinite has had. imo

as for the console release… didn’t experience it. but from what i’ve seen of it… yeah, a failure by a long shot

Upper management is what happened. The ones that only look at players as a number. It’s at the point that games like how Infinite is being handled are not even worth buying.

Basically what happened is that they are playing off the players weakness and when developing this game they spent more time looking for ways to manipulate the players instead of making a decent game.

343 today is why I never pre-order.

ive unlocked more content iin 2 weeks on infinite then i did on MCC for PC when reach dropped.

In a week on Infinite i was at level 30, On MCC a week after launch, i was at like level 6. Progression system are completely different from the two games, and you level up faster in the new game thus unlocking more

Also u say it had more content but Reach on pc at release didnt have forge or coop. playlists were lacking on that as well. I dont understand how you can say it had a better launch when the player base was dwindling a week after release

i dunno man, it might just be me, but i personaly felt waay more rewarded (despite the annoying grind) getting to tier 6 on mcc launch, over tier 20 in infinite. but that’s just me. quality over quantity. but i digress

and yeah, if you play the way the game wants. in MCC you had (very low because of the at the time cap) per match xp, based on the medals thus how well you did. in infinite, unless you’re playing a very specific way… you’re only going to go up 1 level after 7 games, then until the next day, 20 games. technically, it’s going at the same pace as MCC pc’s launch. unless again, you play in a very specific way, and have to bank on RNG for things like: weapons and modes

i recall coop being a thing at launch on MCC, playing with a bud pc to pc on reach’s campaign. and okay, fair, no forge either.
but the playlists, compared to infinite, whiles yes small, still had more. and, even better, i could CHOOSE the gamemode i wanted to play. like swat!

at launch coop didnt exist. it was patched months after when halo ce dropped

Also i can gain a level every 3 matches or so with the new system (thats with playing objectives and not solely focusing on challenges) the difference is in MCC you would need to gain 100k or 200k xp at higher levels with that number increasing the higher the level while in infinite its a straight 1,000xp per level

In the first 6 levels you get 5 new helmets, and 3 helmet variants.

Also, yeah, progression might be slower for some players, since season one was tied to in-game performance :smirk:

Microsoft maybe? there was also the covid-19 thin but people could work from home so… rate that one how you will.

progression may have been slower, but the rewards were worth it. all be it, at the time everyone esencially had the same armor, if not similar. folk were grinding hard. but still. within the first couple levels i could have HELMETS, stuff that i can have and use! what do i get in infinite? or… just some visors, and too many challenge swaps. woop de do

Considering the issues with The Master Chief Collection, when The Master Chief Collection released, and some articles about Infinite’s development, I’d say the reason is Microsoft more than likely.

Simple answer: greed.

Almost every AAA developer and publisher knows they can get away with egregious microtransactions, with the exception of lootboxes. Check the forums. People have expressed interest in paying $10 for a weapon ornament. I have seen others in MP with the $20 armor sets from the shop.

Uhh Crunch, bad overbearing management from corporate control freaks, greed obviously, and lack of developers to help take care of the work load/crappy work environment

Most of this stuff can be attributed to the Game Industries total control over every employee and them not having a say in it all.

It’s the team leads and execs that just botch a totally good multi-player into a cash cow grab to wrench every dollar out of compulsive people

Combination of different teams and greed likely.

Fortnite is what happened.

They probably would have left mcc in the dust where it was sitting since launch but the executives knew they had to build good will with the fans after how much everyone hated them after that launch so that people would buy this game.

In addition to all the other good things with MCC, I was particularly thrilled that they used the 1-50 ranked ladder for the ranked playlists. I always felt good starting at 1 and taking the journey to 50 (or the 40’s, depending on the playlist). Really strange to now have this moba-like ranking system where you just play 10 games to get placed somewhere on the ladder which isn’t satisfying at all and not conducive to long term enjoyment.

They had to do work; that’s what happened.

343 just reuses things that Bungie did right; everything they try to do themselves that they can’t rip off is broken and/or boring. Except the art of course, the art design seems to be very good.

I don’t think that’s true.
There’s a lot of issues with their games, but they still get things right, even when it’s something Bungie didn’t add.
