The majority of players, Halo fan or otherwise, don’t want to play some super serious match just to get acess to slayer and other basic modes. Halo 5 is catering to such a small percentage of players, so In turn it has a tiny population. I’m not good at this writing stuff(Also typing on Xbox One), but I feel like it needed to be said.
Also I know people are going to use Halo 4 as an argument for the low population thing so-
Halo 4 couldn’t keep the player interested with it’s mediocre gameplay. There I said it.
If 343 has catered to anyone it’s the casual crowd, Cod crowd, destiny crowd. Yet to see any movement towards the halo crowd yet. Well other than mercy.
Everything in Arena is ranked, even the supposed “social” unranked playlists. One person climbed so high in the ranks he couldn’t find any BTB matches because everyone else wasn’t close enough to be matched with him.

It’d be nice to be that good though, I’m don’t do very well in BTB .
Ranked is fine. Just play. Why don’t you want an increased possibility of playing against and with players of similar skill? Yes, the system may not be perfect, but at least there is more consistency than we ever had with Reach or H4.
I love ranked. I will probably never reach Onyx, but the time in Plat and Diamond suits me just fine.

In Reach you had arena even if nearly no one used it.
And it`s fine and totally good to play as a gold player against diemond and onyx.

On the contrary. I think Halo players DO want a super serious, super balanced competitive Halo more than they want a casual Halo
