343 At GDC About Spartan Abilities, No Story

343 will be at GDC this year and their topic will be about Spartan Abilites and the design process around them.

http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/making-moves-designing-spartan-abilities-for-halo-5-guardians

While gameplay lovers will find this interesting for different reasons, I’m disappointed there will be no big postmortem about the game as a whole like Halo 4 got. Moreno, this means that post-release discussion about the story is pretty much going to stay with an episode of The Sprint where the discussion was more of patting on the back about how well 343 planned the story and Cortana totes isn’t evil and Frank O’Connors “subtly and nuance” TIME interview. If this is a trend, i.e. Ignore the story after launch and any feedback about it is brushed off, then this sullied the future of Halo for me. There is no way Halo 5 had the perfect story development. I’d love to hear them talk about the ad campaigns and how they worked and failed to be effective. I’d love to see if maybe there were aspects they felt could have been improved on. They did this at GDC with Halo 4 yet Halo 5 seems beyond evaluation on the story front? That seems unlikely.

i too would like an explanation

they pushed the story aside and went awry with it

343i obviously favored the HCS over any kind of story development and MM quality of life maintenance

Thanks for sharing this with the community.

You should meet them there and personally ask them what they are doing behind the scenes for the story!

Just because they aren’t making public statements about the story doesn’t mean that they’ve brushed off feedback about it. There’s a lot that goes on that we don’t and never will see.

We need an explanation. At least honesty will save their reputation now. At this point I’d be okay with a “We ran out of time” or “We started over mid-development”

And that’s exactly the problem here. They aren’t making public statements when a large majority of the fan base wasn’t satisfied with the story and want to know what went wrong.

Saying fans who don’t like how a character turned out are young fans who don’t get subtly and nuance is not showing they are taking feedback to heart.

I think theres a lot of us who think the story is fine and we dont need an explanation either. We just dont make topics about it every 5 minutes.

Liking it is fine, but the first mission with its disconnection from the overall lore and unexplained plot points shows it has problems. I’d like to know why.

I wish I could go to this. The one year I miss GDC…

Good thing the vault exists

Thanks, Halsey! This will be an interesting watch for me. It may not explain their justifications of the story fiasco, but will be interesting nonetheless.

I mean, they kind of have a point though. That is the exact reason why people don’t like Locke, because they’re young and don’t get those qualities. (Opinion)

Anyways, that’s not the point. That statement still doesn’t mean they’re ignoring the feedback. I’m not arguing for or against them, just stating facts. (except for the whole character thing of course)

So the only reason people don’t like Locke is because they are young and don’t get it? What constitutes young anyway? It is such a dismissive argument that falls in on itself.

Its never going to happen for the same reason we are never going to get that MCC post-mortem, it would probably make them look bad. In fairness that isn’t exactly unusual for this sort of thing. Candid discussions of less well received media can be pretty rare. I think some of the Hobbit behind the scenes stuff is supposed to be one of the few exceptions.

My issue at this point isn’t just with the story itself, but 343’s treatment of the lore in general has just gotten worse. Why bother keeping up with anything if huge plot threads and characters can be dropped and ignored at a moments notice.

Yet the odd thing is they’ve shown they are able to do this with Halo 4. Why now all of the sudden we get near radio silence is beyond me.

I don’t think so, but that’s not the point of this post. I don’t want to get off topic. I’m sure we’ll meet again in a Locke-themed post one day, friend

So all young people are stupid because that is exactly what that statement is saying. Also most of reviews who are not that young, the majority though the story was not good and the characters bland.

Well now I think YOU are stupid… Not really. Never did I use the word “stupid” but younger people tend to not grasp the more complex aspects of stories, its not a flaw, just something that older and mature people have a better understanding of.

That being said, maybe 343 should have made a more easy to understand and simple character, especially since they lowered the rating to T.
