Right now I would have to say Halo (10yr) is less than Star Wars (34yrs) but I believe halo has potential to approach near star wars level of fame. We stand here at the 10yr mark and look what Halo has done so far. I can only imagine how grandiose Halo will be given another 20 years. Do you believe in the richness and intrigue of the halo universe to carry on through the generations of gamers and such?
Step into the Time machine and tell me where you see Halo in the year 2031.
Star Wars changed an entire generation, where Halo only effected gamers and only Xbox gamers.
I dont think Halo is remotely close to it;however, I do equate it on terms with Mario as a console mascott. Without Halo Xbox would be nothing less than another failed console.
To relate it to Star Wars from an impact perspective on the general population is overzealous, but to compare the universe to the Star Wars universe would be appropriate. Halo for the Videogame Console is what Star Wars was to the movie theater vhs ect…
Halo and Star Wars both conquered on 2 fronts. From the technological perspective Halo through its iterations introduced effective FPS to a console 2 control sticks, xbox live integration, lan parties, matchmaking, ect… Most of those features have now been adopted as industry standard. Very much in the way that Star Wars took everything to the next level.
Second, they both have 2 of the most immersive Universe’s to set their fiction. The universe is vast enough to allow for multiple stories to be told and have them all maintain relevance.
Can Halo become Star Wars esque in regards to it’s acceptance with the masses? I believe there are 2 ways to make this happen, either the masses continue to become more in tune with console gaming, or make a movie. If the movie gets the green light (again…) It has to be big budget and pushing forward the technological advances of cinema the way that it did on videogames. Then Halo will become the first videogame to truely transcend the boundaries between gaming and cinema.
Once Halo goes to the “Big Screen” (as we all hope) We’ll see it take off like Star Wars.
When I explain Halo to other folk, I typically describe it as the Star Wars or Star Trek of video games. In that reference, its more than just the game, its the multimedia and expanded universe found in the novels etc.
I do agree that Stars, both Wars and Trek did change an entire cultures way of thinking where Halo has not done that.
But yeah, personally I think you analogy is spot on.

I don’t see the Halo franchise spawning six movies that are among the highest grossing films of all time. Never was into Star Trek but that had a bunch of TV series. Halo isn’t going to duplicate what Wars did in theaters or Trek did on TV but Halo will sell billions of dollars in video games.
Was Star Yrek even that popular? I know it had the TV shows, but weren’t they on oddball channels? Star Trek seems to appeal to a pretty narrow audience whereas Star Wars has broad appeal amongst children and adults, casual and hardcore.
If Halo wants to be a mega franchise, they will have to make PG-13 movies, happymeal promotions, Lego, Saturday morning cartoons etc.
BigLance,
My reference to Star Trek indicated that broad universe that was spawned from a simple tv show that lasted only three season in the 1960s. It became a cult phenom, spawning at this point I think thousands of novels, toys films etc.
Has Halo reached that? or close to Star Wars? No I dont believe so and agree with your statement. But, I see Halo at Toys R Us, Barnes and Noble, etc. Star Wars chnaged the way the world thinks, Halo has not done that, but it had a great impact on how people view video games.
Im starting to ramble, but a good thread of discussion.

Thank you, you saved me from writing a really, really long answer. You saved all of us.
I want to add, the thing with CoD. There’s 3 wars going on for us NATO members, it’s free advertising in that the images and sounds that CoD offers is constantly bombarded into the minds of many gamers. Halo doesn’t really have that.
Personally, the web-comics are a great. But there needs to be a cartoon-series on par with Spawn’s 3 season run on the cartoon networks running sometime after 10pm (or whatever the earliest is in the region that such a show could be seen on air).

I’d say take the cartoon in the other direction and make it for kids. Who didn’t love tuning in Saturday mornings to watch the loveable cartoon Ewoks? Instead of Ewoks we could have a series based on the Grunts
Make a Lego Halo video game and all that jazz. I would never play it but it would introduce a new generation to Master Chief.
I am a long time watcher of the Super Hero Squad… I do not want to see Halo go in that direction quite yet. Something about humanity being slaughtered from tens of billions to less than one hundred million and the methods used not working in my mind.
Some people might call me crazy but Halo has surpassed Star Wars for me. Halo’s universe is just as expansive as Star Wars and has a decade’s worth of quality games and still going strong. I hated the Star Wars prequels and as much as I love Star Wars it hasn’t given me anything good since I’ve been alive.
Star wars has more novels and comics due to its longevity but I prefer halo.
Old thread.
Halo will (Hopefully) win.

You know there are books right?
They need to reach an audience beyond just games and books. Forward Unto Dawn reached people who weren’t originally interested in Halo, and so movies, TV, and events like the Double XP promotion would greatly help Halo escalate to Star Wars-level fame.
P.S.
I thought Waypoint had a character limit on the topic title?
