3 Questions for Halo 4. (SD)

1) Will I be able to enjoy the campaign on a SD TV? (since the design has no doubt been optimized for HD)
2) Will I be able to play competitively on an SD TV; Or will I be at a disadvantage?
3) If At all impaired by having lower resolution, how severe will this be? (Unable to read text? Difficult to spot enemies?)

Thank you.

You will likely be impaired to some degree. I don’t know how severe it would be though.

Many games are optimized for HDTVs. the only problem you may really have is the inability to read smaller text easily.

  1. Only you can answer that. See bold.

  2. I don’t know your connection and no, I don’t want to know.

  3. Don’t know.

343i has not released any information about screen resolution potential issues. Just get the game, keep the receipt, and if you are experiencing issues, return it within the designated time frame and approach the forums in the general discussion area (this will be post release and will be better suited for that section). Beyond that, I honestly don’t think its going to affect you that much.

your biggest problem will be small text, although you might not be able to see a small part of the hud (a bit of the left side of my radar is cut off when i play reach on a SDTV).

Generally, the better the resolution the better your gameplay experience. Your enjoyment really depends can you tolerate low-resolution picture or not. You most likely can if you have always played on a low-resolution TV. As for your second and last questions, the lower resolution will make everything on the screen more unclear. Especially targets far away can be hard to see and if the environment has a lot of foliage, all the enemies and the foliage combined may at worst look like they were all just the same blur from far away. Some text may also be difficult to read, but it really depends does the game have text with low font sizes.

There is one thing I can assure you: everyone I know who have made the investement from changing from playing at low-resolutions to HD resolutions has though it was worth it. A while ago two of my friends finally bought HDTVs, were reluctant at first to buy a cable that supports HD resolutions (even though such only costs about $10), but after I showed them, they both absolutely loved it. In other words, the change from low-resolutions to HD is absolutely huge, especially in games where you really need to see even the smallest objects on the screen.

So, if you even have the money to buy even a low-quality HD display, computer monitors can be as cheap as $200 and small HDTVs $400. The improvement is certainly worth all the money. So, if you have any chances of switching to a HDTV, I highly recommend it.
