3 games, same mistake

It seems to me that 343i has a real problem doing what needs to be done to keep a game feeling fresh after launch.

Why Halo 4 got old fast: well obviously there were lots of things fundamentally wrong with the MP from the get go like ordinance drops and loadouts, but what I remember frustrating me was the fact that everyone had a bolt-shotgun in their back pocket. The armor unlocks were worth playing for, and you reach max SR rank in like no time. It got old quick. At the very least you could have nerfed the mauler after a week, but if I remember correctly it took at least a couple of months. And how hard would it have been to disable ordinance drops if they were universally hated? Gamers nowadays have such a short attention span you need to act quickly to keep the experience fresh.

Why MCC got old fast: Well this one is simple: it just didn’t work. But aside from that the playlists just got boring. Halo:CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4: all nice to revisit, but for most of us those games have been played to exhaustion. H2A, being the newest game, should have been the focus of MP, but it wasn’t. Why weren’t more maps remade? I would rather have had 3 or 4 maps than ODST. Even if it was just forge maps that got thrown in there it would be better than nothing. (I mean, why did they even include the forge mode?)

Why Halo 5 is getting old fast: I think the gameplay here is tight and fun as hell but there’s too much of an emphasis on the hardcore player. I’ve always played mostly ranked over the years, but even I get days where I’m just too tired to give it my all. Recently, I had four or five busy days where I couldn’t play. I got a little rusty. When i started playing again I was getting slaughtered. It wasn’t fun experience. I honestly feel like waiting until social playlists are introduced to give it another go. Back in the day when this would happen I would jump on a social playlist for a while and warm up before going ranked. Can’t do that here.

Also, there hasn’t been any really notable changes to the playlists. I know the MP team decided that AR/Pistol starts is the ultimate competitive combo, but the BR is just more fun, at least in my opinion. And back in the Halo 3 days I distinctly remember BR starts being introduced right around the time I was starting to get bored with the AR’s. And maybe my memory is a little clouded here, but I’m pretty sure there were playlist updates weekly. Plus forge was this brand new amazing gamemode that no one had experienced before. Halo 3 had a lot of stuff to keep you coming back. Halo 5 doesn’t have anything like that. And the ranking system was just better. Maybe it provides a better overall experience if you get grouped into a certain tier right off the bat, but there was something addictive about working your way up to 50. And then once you got to 50 you needed the exp to unlock the general symbol to show how badass you are. Now, apparently to deter people from leaving before a match starts, we can’t even view a person’s rank.

Point is, 343 doesn’t do anything to keep the experience fresh, and by the time they do take action everyone has already moved onto a new game.

The only reason MCC got old so fast is because its lack of a working File Share so there was no way to share maps and play popular maps with friends, unless you were friends with the original creator.

Halo 5 will explode in popularity of forge is a hop and not a flop.
It needs a working file share, immensely customizable custom games with many MANY types of variants, and an amazing forge.

“Only” Lol this guy.

I don’t like the ranking system either, to be honest. In December they’ll be adding a whole lot of stuff in, including forge. With that, there’s also going to be gravity hammers!
There’s also been talks of bringing social servers into play. Maybe that means Grifball will make a comeback as well!

The playlists have already gotten a little boring to me. They’re all a lot of the same, and there’s a sort of really high difficulty slope where people who have the game to play 24/7 just dominate people who want to jump on and get a few rounds in. If the ranking system actually worked how it was supposed to and let you rise in ranks it would be a lot more interesting. I do also miss ranks that were actual military ranks. Those were really neat to earn.

Yeah, you’re right; I forgot about those. Very good point.

Exactly. I feel like why am I even trying so hard if it’s just going to get reset anyway? At least give me something that shows I achieved a certain rank.

Did I forget to mention the broken multiplayer for the first 3 weeks of the game? oops…

Yeah, except it was broken until March, and even then there were many things left to be desired upon. The game is still pretty broken.

Until March? Are you kidding me? I bought it April and that piece of -Yoink- was still broken then I started getting the dumb “Downloading latest data” in June. Couldn’t play Halo MCC online for months but every other game worked fine.

If Halo 5 doesn’t bother to add a file share system an excellent theater system, and custom games with forge as an offline option the length of the games life will crash and burn.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but it took the better part of 2 years (about 12-18 months) to max Halo 4, now this was mainly due to my region (Australia) not getting the double XP mountain dew. The boltshot really didn’t affect me much in BTB, but it was there sometimes. So at the end H4 lived a lot longer than people made it out to be, if anything, people who absolutely hated it kind of killed it (and the lack of DLC support, but that’s my gripe with it).

The MCC, I agree on, since it took so long to have a “working” game environment, it killed practically all my motivation for anything in that game (even campaign).

For me, Halo 5 is too early to say whether it will succeed or not, Forge is important, BTB is important, having more that 5 game modes at launch is important even if they aren’t day 1 playlists. There is only so much RNG BS based defeat that people can take before they absolutely loath the game mode.

Once forge comes out if there isn’t anything interesting other than forge the games life span will be short even forging gets boring if there’s nothing to do with it.

pardon my n00b question, i’ve only bought my first ever Xbox/HALO combo 5 days ago - but what exactly are Social Playlists?

…see, i have no friends to team up with yet, and being the ‘solo’ player in a game i’m brand new to feels overwhelming at times, so, i could really use some place to practice the Multiplayer
