26th century weapons

Do you think the UNSC will be upgrading their current weapon systems to something with a little more power? This is something that has always bothered me about halo, and I hope they do upgrade from basically cold war era weapons and ammo to something more 26th century. What do you think?

Now that they have forerunner tech, the time has come for a bit of an overhaul, but they way they look should remain the same.

Possibly, however they can’t change all there weaponry so quickly lol

And thats even if because they don’t have the expertise with plasma technology to create anything like the covenant. Not to mention light based weaponry considering not even the covenant could crack the technology

Well the covenant aren’t exactly the brightest bunch so I’m fairly certain that humans will very quickly crack plasma and light based weaponry. They will need it for what is to come.

They had the engineers, now the UNSC does.

But isn’t the DMR the most overpowered rifle?

Not until I -Yoink!- it for some reason!

It uses the same round as the Assault Rifle. In-canon it shouldn’t be a whole lot more powerful, maybe just a bit because of the longer barrel.

The UNSC appears backwards due to a stylistic attempt to make make them noticibly different than the covenant (and now forerunners). They’re also meant to be down to earth and relateable. When you see human tech in most of halo, it feels human, not like “generic sci-fi tech”.

Human infantry weapons seem plenty effective canonisticly (covenant dominance was mostly ship based), so I dont see them risking their production lines. From a gameplay point of view, 343 doesn’t want to ditch too much stuff, its probably why we still have the covenant at all.

That said, the games are slowly showing a few more advanced human weapons, mostly the Spartan Laser and Railgun, as well as the Guass Hog. Its likely advanced weapons will likely stay in more the “gimicky power weapon” category, to keep the favorites in play.

Well, we’ve at least got a hold of a lot of Forerunner weapons since Spartans are training with them on Infinity.

That stuff isn’t even all that advanced. We already have lasers capable of engaging missiles and aircraft, and are developing railguns and coil guns, the former for use on naval vessels and the latter is being scaled for small infantry vehicle applications. Simply put, we will have at least at least a guass-hog within the next few decades. I would say that puts the UNSC pretty far behind the curve.

Bungie’s reasoning was that the humans spent a few hundred years colonizing and in that time of peace did not do any type of weapons development of research.

I know, a stupid cover.

Well perhaps think of it this way, the weapons they had been using worked just fine and if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

The UEG and the UNSC spent a lot of money colonising planets and didn’t have the money to spend on weapons development.

They never realised they would face an enemy so formidable in the form of the covenant and thus were perhaps left behind a bit.

Of course the UNSC has always stuck to the adage of - If it hurts, it works.

You’re pretty much ignoring my first whole paragraph.

In a couple hundred years, given our current rate of technological progress, the USNC would ‘realistically’ be so different than us that we wouldnt be able to understand them. Most of the stuff the UNSC and the covies can do would be “been there done that” even if FTL isnt quite at their level.

Instead, Bungie/343 decide to give us a very relatable humanity. It creates a clear disctinction between us and the aliens. The covenant/forerunners would not feel advanced if all our guns fired plasma and lasers too.

And as others have said, the UNSC weapons are clearly still quite effective. A nuke still blows up the didact’s ship in the end (i’m actually surprised during midnight that when Infinity punches a hole into the didact’s ship, the chief didnt just shoot the nuke in there, leave, and have everyone pummel the ship, seemed like that mac was plenty effective).

Besides the space travel and shields, the U.S. military’s real tech is better than the futuristic UNSC tech.
