2 days and still no Halo...

I pre-ordered my copy of Halo: MCC. I live on the west coast, so I was able to pick it up at 9:00 rather than the midnight release time. I got it, brought it home, put it in my console, and started the install. Everything was going according to plan, so I went to bed. This was were things started to go wrong.

When I woke up the next morning, the game was still installing. It had made it to 75ish%, so it was playable, but I couldn’t access anything outside of Campaign or Halo: CE and Halo 2 (non-anniversary) custom games. I was okay with this, I’d just let it finish.

But it didn’t finish. 3:00 in the afternoon it was still at the same percentage. Hadn’t moved at all. After looking online for a while, I found that it was because it might have started the update before the game was finished. So I hesitantly uninstalled everything, took my console offline, and started the install. It was done in around 30 minutes. Things were starting to work for me. So I got onto my game. After playing around in the menus for a second, I realized I still couldn’t access anything outside of Campaign or Halo: CE and Halo 2 (non-anniversary) custom games. I was no longer okay with this. I had bought the game in order to play Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer, and I wanted to play it. So I started the update, at roughly 4:00 yesterday.

I went to the store, got some dinner, bought a movie, and watched it, letting Halo update the entire time. It was going slowly, but installing nonetheless. I knew on my internet speed (according to my modem, my down/up speed is 1180 Kbps / 445 Kbps), this could take a while, so I wouldn’t rush it. After the movie, the update had reached 45%. At this rate, I could still play tonight. So I went and got on my 360 and played for a while. Finally, when I could no longer keep my eyes open (1:30 A.M.), I checked the game. 77%. I could go to bed, and it would most certainly finish before I got up in the morning.

This morning, at around 8:00, I got on, and the update had only reach 82%. As of right now, at 12:45, the update is at 83%.

I love Halo. The entire idea of the Master Chief Collection makes me so happy. But this is also taking up 60gb of space on my hard drive and I can’t even play it. Does anyone have any solutions for making this update go faster?

Things I’ve tried:

  • Pause the download, then resume.- Disconnect from the internet with download active, then reconnect.- Pause, disconnect, reconnect, resume.- Pause, disconnect, power down, turn on, reconnect, resume.- Pause, disconnect, power down, unplug, then reverse.- Any other variations thereof.Things I can’t do (for various reasons):
  • Alter modem settings (I’m not paying for the internet, so I can’t mess with it. I know how, I just can’t.)- Alter modem connectivity (see above)I’m willing to try almost anything at this point for the update, but this is what I have and can’t do. If someone has anything that can help me out, please let me know.

I started updating at just gone midnight on the 11th BST, and it didn’t finish downloading fully until about 5pm. Prior to that my game download had been at 92% and took over two hours for the final 8%.

Unfortunately, all you can do is just wait and play through campaign until it’s done. I was able to play H2:A campaign once it had reached about 60%.

I can’t even launch my game right now, because of the update. Fortunately I did also get Assassin’s Creed: Unity, so I do have something I can play, but I can’t play Halo. My update just hit 84% though, so… there’s that…

Good news: I finally got Halo to launch. Bad news: Halo: CEA, Halo 3, and Halo 4 are all at 100%, but Halo 2 is at 88.5 and the 5th box (what is that?) is at 38.5. And for some reason I still can’t launch outside the first two custom games.

No offense but how do even play multiplayer with a 1.1mbps down and .5mbps up connection? …

Anyways try changing your dns in your Xbox settings to 8.8.8.8 and 4.2.2.2

I don’t play a lot of online, mostly just local with my mom and brothers. But I did change the DNS to your suggestion. I can’t tell if it’s working yet, but almost immediately after trying that, the percentage went up one, so maybe… Thanks for the suggestion.

It took long enough, but my update is finally complete. Thanks for helping.
