I’ve been pondering this for a while. How will 343 map sprint and a secondary ability on a control scheme?
Putting sprint on an Analogue stick would ruin Zoom and Crouch capabilities.
I for one hope Bumper Jumper stays. So in my case.
A - Grenade Swap
B - Action/Reload
X - Ability or Sprint
Y - Weapon Swap
LB - Jump
RB - Melee
So where can the second AA go?
The only way I can see it working is if toggle grenades shifts to the D-PAD. This would be very awkward though. Possibly a Hold or Tap system on X?
Thoughts?
You raise a good point. If all of these are taken (on Default)…
A-Jump
B-Melee
Y-Change Weapons
LB-Change 'Nade Type
RT-Shoot
LT-Grenade
LS-Crouch
RS-Zoom
The only left over buttons are RB, X, and Dpad directions. One of them has to be the reload button, and I’m assuming that’s X. So, RB, and the Dpad are left for Sprint and AA. I hope 343 figures out something good to map it to.
A - Jump
B - Melee
X - Reload
Y - Change weapon
LB - Sprint
RB - Armor Ability
LT - Throw grenade
RT - Fire weapon
LS - Crouch
RS - Zoom
Up - Grenade type 1
Down - Flashlight/vision
Left - Grenade type 2
Right - Grenade type 3
Back - Score
Start - Pause
Maybe you could tap RB for sprint and hold it for your ability. Maybe.
it’s all about taking the D-pad serious this time
it was nothing in the previous Halos
> Maybe you could tap RB for sprint and hold it for your ability. Maybe.
Both sprint and the bonus AA will most likely be mapped to the bumpers resulting in the classic face button layout of Reload, jump, melee, and switch weapon. Which ends up moving the grenade types to the d-pad
Switching from right to left (AA to AA)would be good.
I’m hoping LB is kind of “the button” for AA’s. LB while moving could sprint, LB while in air could activate thrusters, and LB while standing still could activate hologram and ‘Forerunner vision.’
> Switching from right to left (AA to AA)would be good.
Wouldn’t work too well if someone is in a tight situation and needs to find cover fast, and they’ve gotta switch their ability before they can move.
Now that I think about this, I understand why they didn’t bring back duel-wielding. Their’s no room on a controller for an AA, sprint, fire both weapons, and reload both weapons w/o having people end up with carpal tunnel.
They could possibly go the CoD route and map grenade throw to the RB right above weapon fire. That would allow sprint to go down to the trigger like it is for boost on most vehicles.
It just depends. Jet pack could be a function of jump… Jump and hold, jump press again in mid air.
If sprint is a built in ability rather than a swapable AA we may start needing the D pad and full button mapping.
The same as Halo: Reach’s recon layout, sprint would be the same as armor ability (LB).

I don’t like the idea of having the control scheme change depending on which ability you have.
I was thinking that the sprint function would be to click the LS button but ONLY if you were in a forward motion on the ground. If you are standing completely still or in the air, clicking the LS will let you crouch. I’m not sure if it’ll be able to do that though.
Then your AA will just be the LB button like in Halo: Reach default controls.

How would we crouch-walk then?
Clearly, the main AA (because of Jetpack) needs to be usable along with movement and sight, meaning it must be mapped to a bumper. Sprint could be mapped to basically any button however the RS would have to be usable. Shoot and grenade throw, simply due to established convention, would have to be on the triggers, taking them out of the action. Jump is clearly A, and swap weapon obviously Y. This leaves the following viable control schemes:
Recon:
LT: Lob Grenade
RT: Shoot
RB: Reload
LB: Primary AA
LS Click: Crouch
RS Click: Scope in/out
A: Jump
B: Melee
X: Secondary AA (Sprint outside of Customs)
Y: Swap weapon
D-PAD UP: Night Vision
D-PAD DOWN: Open Forge Menu (in Forge Mode)
D-PAD LEFT: Swap grenade to left
D-PAD RIGHT: Swap grenade to right
Back: Check score
Select: Menu
Bumper Jumper:
LT: Lob Grenade
RT: Shoot
RB: Primary AA
LB: Jump
LS Click: Crouch
RS Click: Scope in/out
A: Melee
B: Reload
X: Secondary AA (Sprint outside of Customs)
Y: Swap weapon
D-PAD UP: Night Vision
D-PAD DOWN: Open Forge Menu (in Forge Mode)
D-PAD LEFT: Swap grenade to left
D-PAD RIGHT: Swap grenade to right
Back: Check score
Select: Menu
Default
LT: Lob Grenade
RT: Shoot
RB: Secondary AA (Sprint outside of Customs)
LB: Primary AA
LS Click: Crouch
RS Click: Scope in/out
A: Jump
B: Melee
X: Reload
Y: Swap weapon
D-PAD UP: Night Vision
D-PAD DOWN: Open Forge Menu (in Forge Mode)
D-PAD LEFT: Swap grenade to left
D-PAD RIGHT: Swap grenade to right
Back: Check score
Select: Menu
Other (similar to CoD)
LT: Lob Grenade
RT: Shoot
RB: Reload
LB: Primary AA
LS Click: Secondary AA
RS Click: Melee
A: Jump
B: Crouch
X: Scope in/out
Y: Swap weapon
D-PAD UP: Night Vision
D-PAD DOWN: Open Forge Menu (in Forge Mode)
D-PAD LEFT: Swap grenade to left
D-PAD RIGHT: Swap grenade to right
Back: Check score
Select: Menu
With vehicles though, the controls are much more simple thankfully
I put quite a bit of time into this. Feedback would be greatly appreciated

Maybe when you are standing still, you click the LS to go into crouch, then you can crouch walk by holding it down. Then you can move the stick freely.
I’m going to compare it to Reach’s default control scheme.
A - Jump
B - Switch Grenade Type
X - Reload
Y - Switch Weapons
LT - Throw Grenade
RT - Shoot
LB - Armor Ability
RB - Melee
LS - Crouch
RS - Zoom
Dpad - NOTHING (Multi-player)
Here is my suggestion for Halo 4’s default control scheme. I left B and X open for either reload or sprint because I don’t know which one would feel more comfortable.
A - Jump
B - Reload or Sprint
X - Reload or Sprint
Y - Switch Weapons
LT - Throw Grenade
RT - Shoot
LB - Armor Ability
RB - Melee
LS - Crouch
RS - Zoom
Dpad - Switch Grenade Type
LB - Jump
RB - Melee
B - Reload
Y - Change weapon
X - Sprint
X (Hold) - Armor Ability
LT - Throw grenade
RT - Fire weapon
LS - Crouch
RS - Zoom
Up - Grenade type 1
Left - Flashlight/vision
Right - Grenade type 2
Down - Grenade type 3
