14.65GB Update.....Really?

Updates are part of any gamers world now a days. It wasn’t always this way, that I can assure you. Back in the day, (80’s and 90’s for me), a gamer could plug in their console, turn it on, pick up a controller, hit start, and play without any mandatory updates because the game needs a patch or something to work correctly. It was truly awesome. Granted online gaming was limited to computers but even then updates were near non existant unless you wanted extra features which were optional.
Halo 5 Guardian’s most recent update of 14.65 GB wouldn’t have existed back then. Most games if not all came complete, fresh out of the box, and ready to play. The main reason for this that Manufacturers allowed Developers more than enough time and more than enough resources to get the game done and get it done right the first time. An old school gamer such as myself can only hope for the days of old to return.

Plus to old days:
Complete games
No mandatory updates
Updates were bonuses a player had the option to purchase,(Ie… Sgt Johnson Character, extra maps, etc).

Con to old days:
Longer period between games that were awesome

This gamer’s wish for future Halo titles is a simple one at that: Allow 343 enough time and resources to get the job done right the first time.

Thoughts?

I don’t know, I don’t really mind day one updates to be honest, especially if it’s something that makes the game better. Since developers have to have their finished product totally done and shipped X amount of days before the actual release date, I’m totally okay with them taking the next couple days to make the game better, or being able to finish a project and pop it into the day one update. I know not everyone has amazing internet, but for the majority of us that have at least a workable connection it’s not a huge deal.

What I do have a problem with is developers making Day 1 chargeable DLC, sometimes it being content that was already on the disc that just needs unlocked through your additional purchase. Just give us the content, man.

There are a couple of discussion topics in the Halo 5 forums already about the recent update, feel free to use one of those existing threads.

From the patch notes of the latest update (also pinned in the Halo 5 forums)

> "NOTE: The Overtime update for Halo 5: Guardians ended up being larger than anticipated in terms of file size. Since the handoff for release, the team has found ways to further reduce the size of this update, and will be addressing this in a future hotfix."
