120 fps halo infinity multiplayer

343 advertised halo at 120 fps for s series and beta went to optimal 120 fps then because they mislead people with false advertising

I play on series X with LG CX and when I play campaign I set it to quality mode and I get 4k hdr at 118hz variable with freesync, when I start playing it dips around but the lowest it drops to is about 60hz. Vrr was also broken when I last played as it consistently drops really low every x amount of frames, causing a flickering effect (especially noticeable on darker screens). I actually wish they put a hard 60 fps cap on quality mode so there wouldn’t be this issue from vrr, because when I play in performance mode there is no flickering and the frame rate is locked solid for me, sadly its just not as nice looking.

A month late but whatever. Hz and FPS do go hand in hand but are not the same. Your TV is displaying it’s frequency, not the fps. Frequency is variable so that’s why you’ll see it jump around but it is not the same as fps. My monitor will also display the frequency, which is 240Hz, but it’ll also display 240Hz when a game is running 60fps. I use software (PC gaming) that will hook to my games and display the actual fps. TV’s and monitors cannot do this. There are monitors that have FPS counters but that still requires a PC and the monitors display drivers to be installed to said PC. Doesn’t work with consoles.

Interesting thread.

I bought myself an XSX and LG 1440p monitor for Christmas so I could play Halo Infinite at 120fps in 1440p as well as the faster load times.

Unfortunately my XSX got bricked playing Halo Infinite so sent it back for a full refund and now playing on my old Xbox One X. I have an fps counter on my LG monitor and it tells me that I’m still getting 120fps in 1440p…which doesn’t make sense as the Xbox One X isn’t supposed to be support this. Is my LG monitor telling me lies?

This is because your monitor is showing the frequency your Xbox is set to, not the FPS. A monitor cannot display a consoles FPS, only the frequency you have your Xbox set to.

Oh right ok…that names sense as it is does stay at 120fps and doesn’t fluctuate. Does that mean my Xbox One X is actually playing at maximum 60fps, and should I turn down the display settings on console to 60Hz? and would that even make any difference to how the game plays or looks if I did?

What I also don’t understand is that the monitor fps display would fluctuate when I had the XSX…so was that representative of what’s on screen or not? Would it have anything to do with VRR or HDMI 2.1 on the XSX?

Yes, there’s only one game that allowed you to play above 60fps on the One X and that was Rainbow 6, they patched it since then.

What model monitor do you have? Is it HDR? 400 or 600? I hate the way Xbox does HDR, it needs to be done with 4K being enabled. I think I made a video a few years ago explaining how Xbox dishes out HDR. Both 4K and allow HDR needs to be enabled even if your monitor isn’t 4K. Just about all HDR monitors/projectors will allow a 4K signal to pull HDR from regardless of their resolution.

If your monitor is HDR 400 then it’s best to just set it up in SDR so you can set it to 120Hz.

If your monitor is HDR 600 with a decent local dimming, giving most LG monitors are IPS so it’ll struggle doing blacks. Then set it up to 4k60 with HDR enabled.

Frequency is variable, so it’s normal to bounce around.

My monitor is an LG UltraGear 27GP850…very happy with it and supposed to be one of the best rated 1440p monitors available (and I can’t complain about the blacks tbh).

I made the decision to go with 1440p 120fps as I believe the XSX can’t do 4K 120fps in performance mode…and a decent 4K monitor is twice the price of a 1440p so doesn’t make any sense for any minor improvement graphics that you probably wouldn’t even see on a 27” monitor.

I can’t remember what settings I had enabled on the XSX but pretty sure both HDR and VRR were enabled. I’m not sure if I’ll buy another XSX just yet, so what settings would you recommend for using this monitor with the Xbox One X? I currently have it set to 1440p 120Hz in Xbox settings and run Halo Infinite in performance mode.

It’s HDR 400 with no local dimming and poor black uniformity, I wouldn’t use HDR with this monitor. I would set the Xbox up like this…
1440p
60Hz (or 120Hz, doesn’t make a difference)
Freesync enabled (your monitors range via HDMI is 48-144hz)
Color depth 8-bit
Color space PC RGB

You mentioned you can’t complain about the blacks. How are you measuring them? This is one of the main weaknesses with an IPS display.

Ok thanks ITD. I’ll give those settings a try :+1:

I don’t have any way to measure blacks on Xbox as far as I know…it’s not exactly technical but I just use my eyes and everything looks good to me.

Gotcha, enjoy it then.

Thanks. What settings would you recommend if I buy another XSX or would they be the same as above?

Same as above but with 120Hz.

It’s not supported at all. I have a top tier PC and it’s locked at 60 FPS.

How is yours locked at 60fps? I can get over 240fps in Halo Infinite with my PC, 5800x ROG 3080 Strix.

After further digging into what you said, Not only did I discover you’re right, but this means I have even less of an idea of what’s causing issues in Quality mode. I have a ticket open with support and posted about it along with some other issues (linked below) but this seems to be a substantial issue that I really can’t think of a way to troubleshoot.
If I can’t see the frame rate that the game is sending me then I have no clue why my tv’s refresh rate fluctuates so drastically in quality mode and only in this game. To be clear when I say “fluctuates”, I can just have the game open and be in a menu while not touching anything, and my refresh rate will sit at 118-117hz with frequent drops to 60, 59, 63, and so on hz and with seemingly no pattern.
All I can think of is that maybe there is some issue having to do with the rates my console/game is telling my tv to refresh the display at. But why only in this game? Why is there no issue in Performance mode (I get a rock solid 118.98hz refresh rate)? If you have any additional information that you think could expand on this I’d really appreciate it, support probably would too haha.
