117 on Master Chief’s armor.

I noticed people commenting on Instagram about the “117” on Master Chief’s chest in the new Halo Infinite trailer. People are claiming that it’s similar to Halo Legends and The Fall of Reach. These people do realize that they put a “117” on Master Chief in practically every Halo movie or trailer? For some reason it never makes it in to the game. My point is that just because the Halo Infinite trailer has it doesn’t mean anything.

Yeah I was wondering about that.

The primary outrage is coming from people who really only care about the games and the game lore, so I wouldn’t be surprised that even if they do know that the 117 has been on Chief in other forms of media, they haven’t cared at all because it wasn’t in the games. I’ve mainly heard the word “tacky” applied with it, but personally I think it might have some militaristic use in identifying the Chief, possibly because there might be more Spartan-IV’s in GEN 3 armor that looks like Chief’s? Or maybe because 117 is a legendary callsign? I’m not sure why they chose it, but I personally like it a lot. It just looks good. “Tacky” to me is wearing a button-up shirt with sweat pants, not putting a military callsign on military armor.

I’m not sure why the 117 has been consistently left off in the games, but you’d really have to ask Bungie about that. I like that 343 has been slowly introducing that throughout the lore. They put number designations on all the Spartan-IIs armor in Forward Unto Dawn, the Fall of Reach animated series, and Halo Legends. Now with it in Infinite, it looks like the number designations will finally make it into a proper game.

I think it looks a bit weird so I’m fine if it’s taken off. The only reason I can think off why they put it back on is:

1: Blue Team returns and their armor looks like The Package, so Chief is designed in the same way for some sort of consistency’s sake.
2: In co-op there will be Chief clones for P2/3/4 and they want to differentiate Chief from the other players. Adding a number is a way to do so.

Don’t say it never makes it to the game. Numbering on the Spartan-IIs’ armor was in Halo Wars 2 and Halo 5 (in braille) on their Gen 2 armor. It was traditional for them to have their service tag numbers on their Mark IV armor. Glad to see it being kept up on their Gen 3 armor in Halo Infinite.

True. Halo Wars 2 had it. I’m fine with either having the number or not. I never liked the introduction of Blue Team in Halo 5 but if they are going to stay, I would like them to all wear the same armor with different numbers/emblems. Spartan IIs are much cooler when they wear semi identical armor. Halo Wars has captured the Spartans better than any other Halo.

I still think Commander Jerome is one of the coolest concepts of a Spartan. Those heavy plating and a Command Mantis, yet he still looks more like a Spartan than most of Blue Team and the Spartan IVs.

Honestly, I hope Jerome becomes the new hero eventually. Master Chief is getting old and needs a rest. Jerome would be the perfect way to go back to a more classic Spartan II. He is younger due to being in Crysosleep for 25+ years and he has his own AI now.

I was hoping in Infinite, somehow those two met up. Blue Team and Red Team finally meeting again and even hearing them probably commenting on different strategies to deal with the Flood and Covenant/Banished if they are in the game.

I think it does mean something considering the 2019 trailer is the opening cutscene. I hope they keep it.

So there would be Spartan 117, 118, 119, and 120. That would be hilarious.

And mess up canon haha. I don’t think they’ll assign following numbers to the ‘clones’. To be honest I’d rather see my co-op partners appear in their multiplayer configuration anyway. We’ll see what happens.
