Unit variety is good, but there’s no point in having unit redundancies; two or more units that function and serve essentially in the same role. Slight differences in stats isn’t enough.

I guess the main difference would be in the secondary ability. Spartan IIs hijack, Spartan IIIs could have bubble shields, Spartan IVs could have something else, perhaps go hyper like in the opening cut scene in halo 5.
if you’re talking about upgrades, eg. Hornet to hawk, then there’s no advantage NOT to keep them as separate units. If I’m getting attacked and don’t have many resources, I’d rather spawn say 5 hornets for 200 each than say 3 hawks if 300 each, for example. Or at least have the option to depending on stats.
halo wars 1 overwrites the previous upgrades, what advantage does that offer.
I guess the difference for the rocket hog and wolverine would again be secondary ability. Hogs still ram, wolverines volley. Also hogs would be 1 population worth and weak, wolverine would be worth 3 population and stronger like a tank.
I don’t think much difference is needed between the hogs and falcon. Perhaps make falcon 25% more expensive since they can fly. Don’t know what the secondary ability would be.
I like where you went with multiple variations of Spartans. Here is a thought i had regarding Spartans in HW2:
Spartan II’s- More expensive than SIV’s. Move more slowly than SIV’s but have more HP. Can be upgraded with heavier weapons than SIV’s and can operate vehicles.
Spartan III’s- The cheapest of the three variants. Have less HP than II’s and IV’s and move slower than both but faster than Marines. Can be upgraded with the same weapons as II’s but deal less damage overall.
Spartan IV’s- Slightly cheaper than SII’s, but are faster and more agile than SII’s. Have less HP than SII’s. Can be upgraded with slightly better weapons, but most upgrades focus on upgraded abilities (Thruster pack to avoid damage, shoulder charge to deal devastating damage). Can operate vehicles.
