I love Halo. Check my service record and XBL gamertag if you want. I’ve played almost nothing but Halo for the last 14 years. I’ve read all the books. I’ve taken time off work for Halo releases. Etc, etc. I have over 100,000 kills in 3, 4, and Reach alone (it could be near 1/4 million with all CE LANs, CE PC, H2 on my 1st GT, and TMCC combined). I had all Halo achievements prior to TMCC and my Halo gamerscore is currently 15,195.
This is the worst Halo of the series. I’ve tried for the last 3 weeks to like it (and should I even have to try?). But I guess it’s just finally sinking in that 343 has turned Master Chief into a pathetic old Spartan who “is not emotionally equipped” to deal with Cortana. And Cortana is now the supreme evil dictator of the galaxy. I understand its their story to do with as they please, but what exactly were they trying to accomplish by painting the 2 main characters of the last 14 years in such a bad light? And I hated playing as Locke just as much as I hated playing as an elite in H2.
The core of the multiplayer isn’t that bad. Although infinite sprint still really bothers me. So does shoulder charge and ground pound. But whatever, at least everyone has them. The area H5 has failed at the most in multiplayer is that none of my friends want to play it. I’ve been playing Halo with these people over XBL and at their houses for 14 years! They used to love Halo! Most of them got H5, but I can’t get any of them to play it! It’s really nothing like any other Halo when you compare aiming, radar, movement abilities, ADS, etc. Yeah, it takes some getting used to. And, yes, games are supposed to “evolve”. But when it becomes unrecognizable is it even Halo anymore? And don’t even get me started on the fact that we as a community have already supported H5 with almost half a billion dollars! And we can’t even get a dev made BTB map at launch??
Anyways, it was for these reasons I gave H5 1 star on Amazon. Turns out I wasn’t the only one. Here’s all the Amazon reviews for all the FPS Halos for your reading pleasure.
Halo CE 1,892 reviews 4.6 out of 5 stars
Halo 2 1,217 reviews 4.3 out of 5 stars
Halo 3 975 reviews 4.3 out of 5 stars
Halo ODST 733 reviews 3.9 out of 5 stars
Halo Reach 1,367 reviews 4.4 out of 5 stars
Halo 4 2,814 reviews 4.4 out of 5 stars
Halo 5 1,078 reviews 2.8 out of 5 stars
Yes, I know a lot of them are 1 star for split screen. But people are entitled to their opinion. And if SS is that important to them that they’ll go to the trouble of writing a review, then that counts for something! (And H5 really could’ve used the free hype from SS right about now!) I trust a multitude of fans opinions way more than one single guy writing for a video game website who is either being paid to be critical or is trying to impress someone else in the industry. I personally feel like all of these ratings are justified.
