1-50 Trueskill System? How about Division Ranking instead?

I’m a Community and Trivia Halo Fan. I tend to spend my time simply playing the Campaign Segments and immersing myself in the stories that Halo tells. Halo CE and Halo: Reach are perhaps in my taste, two of the greatest games during the Gamecube-PS2-Xbox and Xbox360-PS3-Wii Era. Halo CE was filled with such alien wonder and Halo: Reach was filled with such emotional climaxes (This is my taste, others may disagree with it but that’s fine)

So I gradually play other games from time to time and I see my older brother playing Starcraft II. I see him playing and I ask him some questions about it. One of the most notable questions I asked was what is the ranking system like. He showed me the Division System. How players were segmented into divisions based on skill and how it requires constant updating and participation for the Best of the Best to remain as the crowning players of the game.

As a Halo Fan, I mention that this is alot like the Arena Rating System in Halo: Reach but that Arena is only limited to one playlist and that these can tend to be varying in Gametypes and Maps. I then begin seeing people stating that Halo: Reach needs a 1-50 Ranking System Again that can be visible so that players can tell who’s a Major and who’s a General.

I think it would be best if 1-50 True Skill was perhaps not included in future Halo Games. In Halo 2 it wasn’t really mentioned since using Hacks seemed to be the most controversial way to get it but Halo 3’s 1-50 Skill System encouraged experienced players to act out of conduct. They would Boost, De-rank and even sell the accounts online for profit depending on what playlist the rank was achieved on. Less-experienced Players were turned off by the Ranked Playlist and moved over to the Social Playlist where they would remain in Rank-Halt Limbo for the rest of their Halo 3 Days.

So I’m simply thinking this. Why would 1-50 be necessary for a future game like Halo 4 which I believe will cater to all Halo Fans should Franky and the Homeboys keep their promise about their future games. Halo: Reach’s Arena is a good concept but why not add a Division Ranking System instead of a 1-50 System and apply it to all of the Ranked Playlist Options. It would encourage players to keep maintaining their rank and it would also lead the game to be favourable for the Competitive Gamer. The ones who have fun in using teamwork to dominate their opponents.

I’m not saying that you should ignore the other audience demographics of the Halo Community in the future Halo Games. All I’m saying is this could prevent some rather uncessary uses of profanity in a Halo Forum.

P.S. The Division Ranking Symbol is highly advised to be visible next to the Player’s Gamertag. It will give bragging rights to the players (For a limited time :P)

There are pros and cons to each system, and one is not simply better than the other.

While the division system in Reach will more accurately display your skill relative to the rest of the community, you do that at the price of a system that is more confusing(for the average joe) and frustrating than 1-50 and a system that turns getting and maintaining your rank into a chore.

The division system is simply the 1-50 system, except you have 1-98 ranks and your rank is a measure of what percentage your trueskill value lies in compared to the rest of the community. The frustrating part about that is your rank can move without any input from you, because of how the percentage placement works.

Anyway, regardless of what ranking system Halo 4 has there is only 1 thing that will have any effect on the nefarious behavior of the players in a skill based ranking system. Making the rank invisible, or at least only visible to yourself. The incentive to cheat comes from having a rank that everyone can see, which is supposed to mean you are the best.

Get rid of the incentive and you will get rid of the cheating (a lot of it anyway).
